WashingtonKatie Zacharia will go down in history as one of the White House press secretaries who has held the position for the shortest amount of time. Five days after debuting with a very brief and hesitant appearance, Donald Trump has decided to fire her. Publicly, the American president told reporters this Friday that Zacharia should reconsider her position. "I don't think Katie should have to suffer the way she suffers at the hands of the press," said the Republican. Although presenting it as an option, government sources have revealed to the New York Times that she has already been fired.
Trump has dedicated himself to blaming the press to justify his decision. The American leader portrays the new spokesperson's departure not as a consequence of her poor performance, but as a way to protect her from the alleged attacks by the media. "I told Katie that, in my opinion, the media had treated her in a very, very unfair way. I said to her: 'Katie, do you need to go through all this? I don't think you need it.' We are trying to do something. I want her to have a good life. The media is destroying her," he stated before boarding the Marine One to go to Georgia, where he has a campaign event scheduled this Friday ahead of the November 3rd legislative elections. The American leader invites Zacharia to leave as a way to avoid the public mockery that her first, and probably last, intervention caused. However, Trump does not rule out keeping Zacharia within the administration in another position.
Beyond the inability to look up from her notes or the slip-up in which she confused her husband with Trump, Zacharia has been the subject of a new controversy in recent hours. Although the American president refers to her as a lawyer, several American media outlets discovered that the White House spokesperson had never actually passed the bar exam to practice as such in the United States. Later, during an interview last night on Fox, Zacharia acknowledged that she had studied law, but that, in fact, she had never managed to pass the test.
Trump, in response to the question of whether he was disappointed that Zacharia had not revealed earlier that she had not passed the bar exam to practice as a lawyer, simply excused her. "I hadn't hired her to be a lawyer. I probably wouldn't have cared if she had told me. She has been loyal to me from day one, but the job [of White House spokesperson] is not easy." Zacharia, 41, is a familiar face within the Trumpist world. The lawyer, and mother of four, already had close ties to the tycoon: until now, she had been working as a communications advisor at the company that manages Truth Social, the Republican's social network.
