The trial begins against the mayor of Istanbul and opponent of Erdogan, for whom 2,300 years in prison are being sought.

The trial of Istanbul's imprisoned mayor, Ekrem Imamoglu, began this Monday. Accused of corruption, he faces up to 2,352 years in prison. Imamoglu, a social democrat and opposition leader to Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, was elected mayor of the capital in 2019.
