Cancel the tsunami alert activated by the Mexico earthquake

BarcelonaMexico's National Seismological Service registered a magnitude 7.4 earthquake on the Richter scale this Friday in the south of the country with its epicenter 135 kilometers southeast of Ciudad Hidalgo (in the state of Chiapas), near the border with Guatemala. Mexico's president, Claudia Sheinbaum, stated in a social media message that no material damage or human casualties have been registered. In contrast, in Guatemala, one person has been hospitalized, and there is material damage.

The tsunami alert that had been issued after the earthquake for the coasts located less than 300 km from the epicenter has been officially canceled this Saturday by the Tsunami Alert Center of the Mexican Navy Secretariat (CAT-SEMAR). However, the Navy recommends that the population and civil authorities maintain precautions at port entrances, due to strong marine currents that could affect tourist, fishing, and port activities. Likewise, during the eight hours following the earthquake, 137 aftershocks were registered in Mexico, and 42 in Guatemala.

The earthquake, which occurred this Friday at 08:48 local time, with its epicenter at a depth of 10 kilometers, particularly affected the Mexican city of Puerto Madero, an important port in the south of the country, and was also felt in Guatemala and El Salvador. In the capital of the state of Chiapas, Tuxtla Gutiérrez, as in other towns in the area, several workers were evacuated from public buildings, according to the local newspaper "La Jornada". Similarly, according to reports from witnesses for the Reuters agency and as seen in images shared on social media, in Guatemala City, dozens of people evacuated buildings as a precaution when they felt tremors. In fact, in Guatemala, one person has been hospitalized, three roads have collapsed, there is structural damage to fourteen schools, and twelve public buildings show cracks.

The Secretary of the Mexican Navy, Raymundo Pedro Morales Ángeles, confirmed that the earthquake has not caused serious damage, but warned of a possible increase in sea level on some beaches. In turn, the Civil Protection Secretariat of Chiapas explained on X that it is "active" and is monitoring the situation in the different regions of the state, without offering further details at the moment.
