BarcelonaCatalonia retreats slightly in the incorporation of new commercial companies in August. Business creation has decreased by 1.1% in year-on-year terms in the Principality in the eighth month of the year, according to data published this Tuesday by the National Statistics Institute (INE). Thus, in the analyzed period, 1,469 new businesses were incorporated in the country. Despite the retreat, it is the fourth best figure for an August in the historical series, surpassed only by the two previous years, 2025 and 2024, and by 2016.
The retreat in created companies, it must be said, has not had the same effect on capital, which has grown when compared to 2025. According to the INE, Catalan entrepreneurs who have incorporated new businesses during August have subscribed about 65.7 million euros, 2.9% more than in the same period of the previous year.
The figure for dissolved companies also grew strongly, reaching 102 in the studied month, 15.9% more than in August 2025. According to the publication from the statistical institute, 70 of these ceased their activity voluntarily, while 16 disappeared in mergers with other companies. The remaining 16 declared other causes.
Spain, on the rise
The state as a whole, it must be said, has not reproduced the Catalan trend: throughout Spain, as can be seen from the INE data, 7,526 commercial companies were created in August, 5.7% more than in the same month of the previous year. This is the best figure for the creation of new businesses in the eighth month of the year since before the 2008 financial crisis.
In terms of subscribed capital, the figure soared even further: it exceeded 456.4 million euros, 92.8% more than twelve months earlier. By sector, the real estate and financial world led the new activity, with more than 20% of the new companies, followed by commerce (15.5%) and construction (14.2%).
The number of companies dissolved in August in the state as a whole also increased slightly, 2.8% year-on-year, to 1,315 companies. Of these, the vast majority, more than a thousand, declared voluntary dissolutions, while 148 were dissolved due to mergers with other companies. Finally, 88 were dissolved for other reasons.
