The Catalan microchip company Ideaded expands with the entry of the Spanish government into its capital
The company mobilizes the 9.5 million from the Ministry of Digital Transformation to expand the Viladecans plant
BarcelonaThe Catalan company specialized in the development of sustainable microchips, Ideaded, is already executing the investment of 9.5 million euros made by the Spanish government at the end of 2025. The firm has dedicated the public funding to expand its facilities in Viladecans (Baix Llobregat), with an improvement of its clean room. The expansion of the short-run chip manufacturing area is already in the award process, as confirmed in a statement, and will be completed in November. The intervention is part of the company's industrial and technological plan, which also includes acquisitions of machinery and new hires of specialized profiles in the world of semiconductors.
The project plans to mobilize 12.3 million euros to expand the microchip design and manufacturing infrastructure, including 13 new machines, of which 9 have already been acquired. It should be remembered that Ideaded operates with specialized machinery in its microchip manufacturing processes using materials alternative to silicon.
The Catalan company's products have applications ranging from advanced computing to pharmacy and logistics, as well as "enormous strategic potential in artificial intelligence and defense," two of the central portfolios in the plans of the ministry led by López.
An "industrial environment"
Looking ahead to September, Ideaded plans to explore the market to hire 25 new engineers specializing in microchips. The objective of this workforce expansion is to "scale towards a foundry environment"; that is, to improve the company's industrial capabilities. They expect to grow the production rates of their circuits by 2027, while celebrating having "achieved relevant milestones" in recent years that "allow for progress in the development of final devices and the validation of semiconductor technologies based on alternative materials".
The State entered the company's capital, headquartered in Viladecans, through the Spanish Society for Technological Transformation – the equivalent of SEPI under the portfolio held by Óscar López–. The minister, precisely, took the opportunity to visit Ideaded's facilities on a trip to Barcelona to inaugurate an event of the European photonics program PIXEurope. On his tour of the plant, López was able to "learn firsthand about Ideaded's progress and role in strengthening technological capabilities for Spain and Europe".
It should be recalled that Ideaded is a company dedicated to the development of advanced computing technologies with materials known as beyond-silicon. It also develops quantum control technologies and other tasks related to the computers and supercomputers of the future. With this activity, they assure, they "contribute to a more efficient, scalable computational infrastructure aligned with European priorities on technological sovereignty".
