Spain last year gained 13,100 millionaires, up to 259,700
The stock market rise caused the large fortunes to increase their value by 6.7%, and placed the country in 14th place in a ranking of 25
BarcelonaSpain gained 13,100 millionaires last year, reaching 259,700, which represents an increase of 5.3%, according to the latest World Wealth Report by the consulting firm Capgemini. This category includes individuals with investable assets of more than one million dollars (equivalent to 860,000 euros today), excluding their primary residence, collectibles, and consumer durables.
Last year's increase, which contrasts with the decline in 2024, is mainly explained by the increase in market values, particularly in the banking and real estate sectors, as well as domestic demand, which drove real GDP growth of 2.8%, one of the highest in Europe, according to the same study. The country ranks 14th (it was 15th last year) in the ranking of major countries with millionaires worldwide.
The financial wealth of high-net-worth individuals in Spain experienced an increase of 6.7%, reaching 782,800 million dollars (672,000 million euros at the current exchange rate). The evolution of equity markets was a decisive factor in this increase. In fact, the capitalization of the Spanish stock market increased by 71.6%, after the fall experienced in 2024, the report states.
The banking sector recorded a net profit of 18,500 million, 5.1% more than the previous year, which boosted stocks. The same happened in the real estate sector, with an investment exceeding 18,450 million, 31% more than in 2024, with housing prices rising by 9%.
Sol Daurella, the main shareholder of Coca-Cola Europacific Partners
Individuals with ultra-high net worth (the category Capgemini uses for those individuals who have more than 30 million dollars) captured most of the gains, "favored by higher exposure to a broader range of public assets and certain high-yield private asset classes," according to the consultancy. Last year there were 250,000 people, which represents a year-on-year increase of 9.4% "and consolidates this segment – in which there are figures such as Elon Musk, the richest man in the world; the main shareholder of Inditex, Amancio Ortega, or Sol Daurella, the main shareholder of Coca-Cola Europacific Partners, the richest person in Catalonia– as the fastest-growing for the second consecutive year." The global wealth of this group rose 9.7% year-on-year. It is concentrated wealth: the top 1% of these ultra-rich represents 34.8% of the total wealth of the millionaire group.
