Renewables lower the bill of Spaniards by €10 during the energy crisis

The wholesale price is among the lowest in Europe

BarcelonaSpaniards have saved an average of 10 euros on their electricity bills during the energy crisis of recent months caused by the war in Iran, according to the latest study by Ember, the independent energy think tank that advocates for energy transition and electrification. According to Ember's analysis, the savings on Spaniards' electricity bills have been possible thanks to the deployment of renewables and, therefore, the reduced use of gas in electricity generation.

This saving has been possible due to the lower influence of gas in electricity price formation

, Ember indicates, adding that gas is usually the most expensive generation source and, when it enters the market to produce electricity, it contributes to raising prices for all consumers.

In Spain, the influence of gas in setting electricity prices has fallen to represent only 9% of hours since the beginning of 2026, compared to 52% of hours in 2021. This is mainly due to the growth of wind and solar generation, which increased by 37% between 2021 and 2025.

“The growth of wind and solar energies is acting as a shield against the impact of global instability on prices,” says Chris Rosslowe, author of the report. “While gas prices are skyrocketing, renewable energies are keeping electricity bills low for Spanish households and businesses”.

The situation is different in countries that continue to rely heavily on gas to generate electricity. With wholesale gas prices in the EU 60% above pre-war levels between the United States, Israel, and Iran, these markets are more vulnerable to rising energy costs.

After the Iberian blackout of April 28, 2025, Spain maintained the pace of renewable energy deployment. Between May 2025 and February 2026, the State incorporated an average of 1.3 GW per month of new wind and solar capacity, above the 1.2 GW average recorded during the twelve months prior.

This progress was accompanied by new policies supporting a renewable energy-based electricity system. The Spanish government's response to the crisis caused by the escalation of the conflict in the Middle East was consistent with this line of action. The temporary tax reductions applied between March and May 2026 reduced the average household's monthly electricity bill by 8 euros, providing relief to consumers and simultaneously acting as an incentive to promote electrification, key to reducing Spain's dependence on imported fossil fuels.

“Several crises led Spain to accelerate its energy transition, and now consumers are beginning to benefit from it,” says Chris Rosslowe. “Electrification is the crucial next step to strengthen energy security and protect the Spanish economy from future price crises.”
