Plug-in hybrids are establishing themselves as the preferred technology

03/08/2026 - 18:08 h.

BarcelonaOne in four cars registered in Catalonia during 2026 is electrified, according to data from manufacturers' and dealers' associations. Despite this, non-plug-in hybrids dominate new car sales, and although they have an electric motor in addition to an internal combustion engine, they are not considered electrified because they do not draw power from the electrical grid.

According to data from the Anfac, Ganvam, and Fecavem associations, between January and July, 86,256 cars and SUVs have been registered in Catalonia, an increase of 10.2% compared to the same period last year. However, July was not a good month, with 12,701 registrations, a decrease of 2.3% compared to the same month last year.

Among the new cars sold in Catalonia this year, gasoline and, especially, diesel cars continue to lose market share. Between January and July, 17,684 gasoline-powered cars were registered, which means 15.2% less than in the same period last year, while diesel cars are becoming negligible: 1,757 units were registered, 44% less than in the same period last year.

The clear success is for non-plug-in hybrids – mostly with eco labels – which accumulated 40,245 registrations between January and July, approaching half of the total, with a 19% increase compared to the same period last year. In the case of gas-powered cars, 4,013 units were registered, 8.58% more than a year ago.
