Corpinnat expects to exceed the sales of the last campaign after the earliest harvest in history

The Penedès sparkling wine brand demands more support from the Generalitat while continuing to increase the number of wineries

Saint Sadurní d'AnoiaThe sparkling wine brand Corpinnat expects to close this year's campaign with better figures than the previous year despite the effects of climate change. With the harvest practically finished, the wineries linked to the association expect to exceed three million bottles sold in 2025, a volume that translated into a turnover of 34.1 million euros.

A good part of this increase is due to the incorporation of new producers. At the end of the previous campaign, the Penedès brand had 19 wineries, while it currently has 24, with notable additions such as Juvé & Camps, which adds two and a half million bottles. Furthermore, according to information shared by Corpinnat this Tuesday in a press conference, at least six wineries are in the process of joining the association.

Beyond the additions, however, the brand claims the sector and its way of doing things as keys to maintaining growth, in an environment marked by the effects of climate change and in which consumer preferences are changing. "Sparkling wines are not only holding up, but exceeding sales; we are in an ideal sector," asserted the vice president of Corpinnat, Roc Gramona, in the press conference that the brand offered from the Recaredo winery. Despite everything, the association also stresses that the most important thing is not to grow exclusively in volume, but above all in quality. "We want to dignify viticulture, and we cannot talk about quality if we have not first valued the grapes and stable long-term relationships with winegrowers and suppliers," claimed the president of Corpinnat, Pere Llopart.

Climatic impacts

This year's harvest at the Penedès wineries has been the earliest in history. The campaign began on July 22nd, nine days earlier than last year, and was characterized by record temperatures. According to data provided by Corpinnat, the average temperature for the current fiscal year has been 1.8 degrees above the average, the highest deviation since 1962. Rainfall also influenced it, being more abundant than usual and marked by its torrential nature.

"There is a new climatic reality, it is evident," pointed out the president of Recaredo, Toni Mata, who at the same time highlighted the sector's resilience in adapting to new realities. Aside from the adaptability of the area's main variety, xarel·lo, producers have adopted other measures, such as reducing the number of vines per hectare or protecting the plant from excess solar radiation, among others.

Grape price

Despite the inclement weather, the amount of grapes destined for the production of sparkling wine has increased by 26% compared to last year. It is estimated that, in this year's harvest, more than 10.5 million kilos of grapes will be brought in, above the almost 8 million from the previous year. Of these, 51% comes from our own vineyards and the remaining 49% from vineyards with which there is a contract.

Regarding the price, Corpinnat had set a minimum of 94 euro cents per kilo, which contrasts with the generalized trend of price reduction. After closing the 2026 harvest, the effective average price for all grapes destined to produce sparkling wine for the brand was 1.02 euros per kilo, which also exceeds the minimum production cost established by the Catalan Institute of Vine and Wine (Incavi) of between 53 and 56 cents.

Demands to the administration

In line with previous years, the Corpinnat wineries took advantage of this Wednesday's press conference to continue making a common front before the administration and to claim themselves as a recognized brand of Catalan product, despite not having the status of a denomination of origin. As the brand points out, the fact of not being under this umbrella prevents them from accessing certain aid or benefiting from promotional activities promoted by the Generalitat.

Despite talks with public bodies, Llopart regrets that "no progress has been made at all". "Perhaps it is a lack of boldness, because there is a DO status that was very necessary before, but now there are other realities," he indicated.

For the association, enjoying these advantages would allow, among other things, to favor the export of their product. According to the brand, sales abroad represent 21% of the income of all the aggregate wineries, a percentage that Corpinnat wants to continue increasing in the face of a national market that is considered increasingly saturated.
