Barcelona in the battlefield of digital salaries

The Catalan capital scales the remuneration of technological professionals by more than 50% since 2018, but still remains far from the great European squares

BarcelonaBarcelona has already built a digital workforce that rivals any ecosystem in the region. According to the latest Digital talent overview, elaborated by the Mobile World Capital Barcelona foundation, the country's capital already concentrates more than 135,000 information and communication technology professionalsThe calculation of the purchasing power of digital employees is more favorable in Barcelona. If the cost of living in all cities is equated, the country's capital is located just below the European average, which drops to 54,000 euros per year. Some environments, such as London, fall several positions due to the progressive increase in the cost of housing and consumer goods. This, in the words of the director of digital talent at MWCapital, Jordi Arrufí, creates a balance that makes Barcelona more attractive than other competitors. "Salaries are competitive, which is an ambiguous word. They are attractive for companies compared to Northern Europe, but the worker has a significantly higher standard of living than the city average," considers the expert. That is, "with lower salaries, digital workers in Barcelona live better".

"Don't reduce it to salary"

Catalan entities in the technology sector also warn that Barcelona's offer for more specialized workers goes beyond remuneration. "Reducing Barcelona's competitive capacity to the salary variable would be an incomplete and unfair reading," says the director of the Cercle Tecnològic de Catalunya, Xavier Sellarès. According to Sellarès – and the rest of the ecosystem agrees –, the Catalan capital already concentrates sufficiently relevant names in the technology industry to guarantee the most sought-after employees other benefits, such as "proximity to decision-making spaces", due to the high concentration of technology offices in the metropolitan region, or "opportunities to grow within organizations". Added to all this is the sun and beach, an "elevated quality of life", which is the differentiating factor for many experts who either travel to Barcelona or decide to stay.

The rise in digital salaries in Barcelona in recent years has, according to the sector, several explanations. According to Martí, the arrival of companies and digital hubs in recent years – there are already more than 200 in the city – has activated competition for the best employees, and when there is a lack of supply, it is normal for salaries to rise." However, as Arrufí points out, the evolution of Barcelona's ICT fabric inevitably leads to remuneration improvements. The capital "is attracting more and more high value-added investments: cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, space economy...", he argues.

Three sectors, precisely, that exceed the average local digital salaries, with 64,100, 59,500 and 59,000 euros annually, according to the MWCapital report. The high concentration of specialized centers in the city tends towards these emerging technologies. And, in fact, AI has already generated more than a thousand new job offers in 2025 alone. Sectorial voices consulted agree, therefore, that Barcelona still has higher peaks to conquer, and that it firmly appears in the forecasts to do so. "The expectation is that several European technology champions may emerge from Barcelona", concludes Martí.
