August marks record passenger numbers at El Prat Airport
Catalan infrastructure exceeds 5.6 million travelers during the summer peak

BarcelonaEl Prat Airport recorded its best August ever with 5,673,319 passengers, a 4.8% increase compared to the same month in 2024, according to a report by airport operator Aena this Friday. The Catalan airport has set eleven consecutive months of monthly records and has seen four consecutive months with more than five million users. Furthermore, this August saw a historic record for daily passengers. On August 14, 195,166 passengers passed through the airport, representing a 3.62% increase compared to the last highest record, on August 16, 2024. As for the day with the most arrivals, it was August 29, with 100,157 passengers, a 4% increase, 100,157 passengers.
Of the total number of travelers recorded in August, 4,374,720 traveled on international flights, 7% more than during the same month last year; while 1,291,957 passengers traveled on domestic flights, 2.3% less than in August last year. So far this year, El Prat Airport has registered 38,396,761 passengers, 4.1% more than between January and August 2024, after also setting "a new record in the annual cumulative total."
In fact, this summer has been the best in the history of Barcelona Airport: 11,213,329 people passed through, 3.8% more than the same period last year. Between July and August of this year, 66,956 operations were carried out, 3.2% more year-on-year, and 35,116 tons of cargo were transported, an increase of 13.5%.
"The summer of 2025 is cemented as the best in Aena's history. Furthermore, this historic volume of passengers has passed through the airports without any significant operational disruptions," said Aena, the operator of Spanish airports, in a statement.
Girona and Reus also grow
For its part, Girona Airport registered 349,535 passengers in August, 1.5% more than the previous year. In terms of takeoffs and landings, there were 3,396 operations, a 5.9% increase compared to August last year. So far this year, the airport has reached 1,575,693 passengers and 19,378 operations, 12.5% and 20.1% more, respectively.
The other secondary Catalan airport managed by Aena, Reus, received 232,747 passengers in August, 12.6% more than in the same month in 2024. The number of operations during the last month was 2,148, a 12.9% increase. Year-to-date, the airport has transported 977,179 passengers, representing 15,913 operations, a 12.4% and 1.2% increase compared to the first eight months of the previous year.
