Aigües de Barcelona earned last year 48.6 million, 70% more

The company, which invested 116 million, reached a turnover of 637 million, of which 400 corresponds to the sale of water

BarcelonaAigües de Barcelona earned last year 48.6 million euros, with an increase of 69.9% compared to the previous year, according to the results published by the company. The company that manages the integral water cycle for 40 municipalities in the metropolitan area of Barcelona and its surroundings – a population of more than three million inhabitants – reached in 2025 a turnover of 637.3 million euros, with an increase of 7.98%. Of this amount, 400 million, which represented an increase of 118%, were due to water sales, with a consumption of 156.4 cubic hectometers, 5.46% more than in 2024. The average tariff increased in March of last year by an average of 5.95%, although for most users it was limited to the CPI of December 2024 (2.95%) and for the rest of consumers it was 6.72%.

The company, controlled with 70% by the French multinational Veolia with Criteria, the investment arm of La Caixa, and the Metropolitan Area of Barcelona (AMB) with 15% each, celebrated its shareholders' meeting this Tuesday. It will allocate 4.9 million to reserves, compared to 2.9 million in 2024; and 43.8 million in gross dividends for its partners, compared to 25.7 million in the previous year. The company, which pays a fee to the AMB that last year was 23.8 million, continued to deploy its investment plan, to which it allocated 116 million last year, according to sources from the group, which is chaired by Miquel Roca.

The 2025 accounts "consolidate the company's return to a situation of normality and guarantee economic sustainability to continue the significant investment effort in improving hydraulic infrastructures and strengthening the resilience of the metropolitan area of Barcelona," according to a statement. The 2025 fiscal year had a positive impact from a ruling that recognizes the remuneration of sanitation for 2020 for an amount of 4.3 million, as well as its legal interest. Judicial rulings recognize the right of Aigües de Barcelona to be remunerated in accordance with the company's articles of association.

Last year, the company allocated 5.8 million to innovation to help create "smarter, more sustainable, and healthier" cities. Aigües de Barcelona states that it generated an impact of 866 million on the Catalan economy last year, equivalent to 0.27% of Catalonia's gross domestic product (GDP) and 1,235 direct jobs, rising to 7,958 when indirect jobs are included, according to the company's social value report.

On the social front, the company allocated 3.26 million to more than 250 initiatives with 200 organizations that benefited over 500,000 people. Additionally, 68,000 households benefited from the social tariff and over 11,000 people in vulnerable situations participated in 60 initiatives run by 46 social entities in 13 municipalities in the metropolitan area. This public-private company is one of those that have been left out of the plan to place the Veolia brand on more than a hundred companies that belonged to the former Agbar, including Agbar itself or Sorea. The French multinational Veolia has Criteria-La Caixa among its main shareholders, with a 5.10% stake in the capital.
