World premieres in the Girona theatre autumn of Temporada Alta
The performing arts festival of Girona and Salt programs, from October 3rd to December 8th, 91 shows and 21 co-productions with names such as Peeping Tom, Needcompany, Romeo Castellucci, Mal Pelo or Baro d'Evel
GironaAfter the summer lull, the cultural season begins in the Girona regions with a brand new edition of the Temporada Alta festival, the 35th, which will be held from October 3 to December 8. The autumn theater season in Girona and Salt will feature 91 shows, 131 performances, 21 co-productions, and 22 premieres, four of which will be first performances world. The opening show will be Has been, about growing up in the performing arts world. It is a premiere in the State that will bring together for the first time the languages of the choreographer Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui and by circus and movement artist Martin Zimmermann.
The four absolute international premieres of the program will be the proposals of Peeping Tom, Needcompany, Hermanos Ibarra Roa and Oligor and Microscopy. The Belgian dance company will present The Salon “Revisited”, a review of one of the foundational pieces of his career, premiered twenty years ago. Needcompany, founded by Jan Lauwers and now in a new phase, will premiere here "Everything must change, under the direction of Maarten Seghers and the choreography of Korean choreographer Sung Im Her. The Chilean company Hermanos Ibarra Roa will bring to the festival The death of the father, while Oligor and Microscopía, a company bridging Navarra and Latin America, will present Museum of lightning, an object theatre play.
"We are 35 years old, that's over 2,200 shows and more than 1.3 million spectators, and this anniversary serves us to look back and gain momentum to move forward. This year we will have a festival especially focused on creation: four companies have decided to ask us to premiere their show at Temporada Alta for the first time, we have never had so many," explained Narcís Puig, artistic director of Temporada Alta, at the presentation press conference.
International programming is complemented by top names with Romeo Castellucci, who will premiere in Spain Faust. Done, not said, a plastic and symbolic approach to the myth of Faust about communication and lack of communication, with music by Scott Gibbons. Cristiana Morganti and the Argentine playwright Claudio Tolcachir will share a project in The forest, and Guy Cassiers and the great French actress Valérie Dréville will present Theseus, his new life. There will also be a newly created laboratory by Blaï Mateu Trias, who will work with his father, Tortell Poltrona, and the company Baro d’Evel.
In addition to the most prominent voices on the European scene, as usual, one of the pillars of Temporada Alta 2026 will be the Ibero-American Connection, which this year will bring together six proposals from Brazil, Mexico, Argentina, Chile, and Cuba. The cycle will include Júlia 15 years later, by Brazilian creator Christiane Jatahy, who revives fifteen years later her staging based on Strindberg's Miss Julie, now updated in the relationship between a girl from a good family and a taxi driver of North African origin. The show, co-produced with the Teatre Lliure, will feature performers Júlia Genís and Moha Amazian. The cycle will also include Parlamento, by the Argentine collective Piel de Lava, creators of the film The Flower (2018), and, in collaboration with the Cruïlla Festival, the concert by Eliades Ochoa, historical voice and guitar of the Buena Vista Social Club.
66 shows by Catalan artists
Faithful to its foundational pillar of combining international creation with support for Catalan artists and playwrights, the festival programs 66 shows from the local scene, most of them our own co-productions, some of which have already been seen in recent months in Barcelona. In the theaters of Girona and Salt, added to those in the sub-venues of 9 municipalities in the Girona regions, the latest projects by Jordi Oriol, Lluïsa Cunillé, Oriol Pla, Xavier Albertí, Cabosanroque, Sergi López, Sergi Belbel, Àngels Gonyalons, Anna Alarcón, Emma Vilarasau, Mal Pelo, La Veronal, Lluís Homar, Jordi Casanovas, Carlota Gurt, Victoria Szpunberg or Ramon Madaula, among many others, can be seen, in addition to the traditional Monday Playwrights' Tournament.
The 35th edition will also keep an eye on stage creation from other regions of Spain, with 11 shows from Madrid, Navarre, Andalusia, Galicia, and the Balearic Islands. Among the proposals will be La forma humana, by the theater director who has made a name for himself in Madrid, Pablo Messiez, starring Omar Ayuso; Verborrea, by director Pablo Remón and actor Javier Cámara; Calentamiento, by flamenco dancer Rocío Molina, which will be complemented by a short film about the artist directed by Carla Simón, and the show Muerta de amor, by Manuel Liñán, also flamenco.
Music will also have a presence with various concerts. In addition to Eliades Ochoa, the program will include Pink Martini, with Storm Large, also in collaboration with the Cruïlla Festival; The Black Heritage Choir, from Chicago, and the Senegalese musician based in Salt Momi Maiga, who combines the kora with jazz and flamenco. The program will be completed with a family offering and a multitude of educational projects in practically all educational centers in Girona and Salt. "From Salt and Temporada Alta, we emphasize the promotion of local talent and, at the same time, we work so that this culture can reach everyone," said the new mayoress of Salt, Cristina Alarcón, regarding the festival's educational vocation.
In the presentation of Temporada Alta 2026, the mayor of Girona, Lluc Salellas, has vindicated the role of theatre as a backbone of the city and the territory. "Seeing that the festival incorporates actors, directors, and producers who live or were born in the city fills us with pride. Theatre has the virtue of pause, of calm, of dedicating ourselves to thinking and reflecting, and this is especially important in the moment we are living".
