The Ideal is closing for renovations and moving to Montjuïc until October

Barcelona's digital arts center will present 'The Last Days of Pompeii' at the Palau Reina Victoria

According to Jordi Sellas, partner at the Layers of Reality studio and director of Ideal Barcelona, ​​the changes will consist of technical improvements and enhancements to visitor comfort. "It's not about preparing this building for the next six years, but for the next decades," says Sellas. "More than 9 million people have seen our exhibitions in 50 cities around the world," he emphasizes. "If we want to continue doing this, we must adapt this building, which is the epicenter of it all."

The renovations will include the construction of permanent screens to replace the current fabric ones, an upgrade of the technology, and other improvements such as climate control upgrades. The future Ideal will incorporate the innovations that Layers of Reality implemented in the theaters it opened in Madrid and Valencia. "We created this theater in 2019 with no prior experience, because there were no immersive theaters anywhere," explains Sellas. "The screens in our Madrid and Valencia centers were permanent because projections work much better on a hard surface. Ideal has never had the opportunity to have them because it was the first test of immersive experience in a permanent space anywhere in the world."

Since its founding in 2019, the Ideal has welcomed nearly 1.2 million visitors, who have enjoyed its in-house programming, featuring major immersive exhibitions dedicated to Dalí, Frida Kahlo, and Jules Verne, as well as events from the digital and performing arts sectors. The temporary relocation to Montjuïc will allow the Ideal to premiere in Barcelona on March 20th. The last of Pompeii, which includes spectacular scenes such as a gladiatorial combat, a mock naval battle, and a tour of the Village of Mysteries. In addition, the exhibition will feature a selection of archaeological pieces. Between the two, the Ideal will occupy approximately 3,000 square meters of the 6,000 square meters of the Montjuïc palace.
