28 years ago, Pep Tosar began a line of creations revolving around poets with that fantastic La casa en obres in which he approached the life and work of the Majorcan Blai Bonet, and which the Teatre del Raval will precisely revive in December to commemorate the hundred years since his birth. Since then, Tosar has walked his imagination through the biography and work of Damià Huguet (Esquena de gabinet) –to whom he has dedicated the small hall of the theatre–, of Guillem d’Efak (Tots aquests dois), of Fernando Pessoa (El fingidor) and of Federico García Lorca with the show Federico García, premiered in 2015 at the Teatre Romea and revived with the inauguration of the new Teatre del Raval.
These are five shows with a very similar dramatic structure, in which visual, musical, and textual language join hands in search of a global poetics. Multidisciplinary shows built with the aim of extracting the personality of each of the poets and the echoes of their word in our world. Once again, Tosar perfectly achieves the goal with this look at the short life (he died at 31) of Miguel Hernández and the strength and relevance of his poetry.
Pep Tosar and Evelyn Arévalo are basically in charge of the biographical information, which is complemented by testimonies from people close to him (including his granddaughter, who timidly admits that the surname is too big for her) and expert opinions; dancer Andrés Corchero evokes the poet's moods; the video work by Agustí Torres brings closer the land that saw him born and the tragedy of the Civil War that would end him. Poetry springs forth in the songs of the Valencian Carles Dénia based on poems by Miguel Hernández, accompanied by the violin of Èlia Bastida and the guitar of Marc López. And it is the music and the musicians that stand out as the protagonists of a tribute that shows a poet who loved life, water, was daring in the search for what interested him, committed to his ideas, also naive, and a victim, in the end, of Francoism. Highly recommended.
