BarcelonaAccess to housing is one of the main problems for the people of Barcelona. This situation has also affected Susanna Griso, presenter of Espejo público, who from the Antena 3 morning show explained the difficulties she has had in finding a rental apartment in the Catalan capital. "It took me four months," the journalist lamented.
During a talk show where the sit-ins in Madrid and Barcelona demanding solutions for decent housing were being debated, Griso wanted to share her personal experience. "In Barcelona, rents are limited and it has been achieved that prices drop by 5%. The supply has been throttled by 20%, that is to say, there are 20% fewer rental apartments. Many owners are dodging the price limitation by putting the homes up for temporary rental and renting them to companies. For individuals, it is almost impossible to find a rental," the journalist detailed.
Griso also pointed out the inconsistencies of the system and remarked that access to a rental is difficult, even for people who, like her, have good financial support. "I spent four months looking for an apartment. I, who am supposed to have a payroll and have guarantees, have not found a rental apartment," complained the journalist, who jokingly began her intervention by saying: "Forgive me for playing Ada Colau."
This week Colau, former mayor of Barcelona, explained on the Cafè d'idees of RTVE that she had to leave the apartment where she had lived for more than 15 years because "she couldn't make ends meet." With only one salary at home, Colau had to leave to share an apartment with a relative.
