Volkswagen ID Polo: the usual car, but in electric format

Volkswagen presents its new electric utility vehicle, which will be manufactured in Martorell

Volkswagen has finally presented the ID Polo, the electric evolution of the brand's urban utility vehicle, which will be manufactured on line 1 of the Martorell plant, in parallel with the Cupra Raval. And it is that the Cupra Raval and this ID Polo are, in reality, the same car with different bodies and interiors, as they share a modular platform, engines and the rest of the mechanical systems. Unlike the Raval, however, this new Volkswagen ID Polo will have a base price of 24,900 euros, which places it slightly below the Catalan model.

The Volkswagen ID Polo is a car that the brand had planned to manufacture and market for years under the name ID 2, but has finally taken advantage of the historic name of the Volkswagen model, in a move that aims to leverage the reputation and legacy of the combustion vehicle that the brand has been manufacturing since the 70s of the last century. However, this ID Polo is a slightly smaller car than the current combustion Polo, although it maintains the price range of the model from which it takes its name. The new ID Polo is 4.05 meters long, 1.81 meters wide, and 1.53 meters high, and offers a trunk of 441 liters in capacity, much more than the current combustion Polo, and even more than the ID 3, thanks to positioning the electric motor of the ID Polo at the front of the vehicle.current combustion Polo, although it maintains the price range of the model from which it takes its name. Aesthetically, the new ID Polo does not represent a revolution compared to the brand's current combustion models, and this is a point really well worked by Volkswagen. This ID Polo maintains the tone of sobriety, efficiency, and rationality that have historically characterized the models of the brand from Lower Saxony and that are, it is worth remembering, one of the elements that Volkswagen customers value most.

The interiors also maintain the rational and ergonomic design of the vehicle, with the persistence of physical buttons that allow controlling the vehicle's temperature or audio volume without having to take your eyes off the road. However, the instrument cluster is fully digital (as it couldn't be any other way) and features a 13-inch central touchscreen to control other infotainment elements of the vehicle. Optionally, customers can also equip the ID Polo with LED ambient lighting, a panoramic sunroof, or seats with a massage function, among other features.Three power sources and two batteries

The new ID Polo will have an access version with a 37 kWh battery, capable of offering around 320 kilometers of autonomy and compatible with a fast charging system of up to 11 kW in alternating current and 90 kW in direct current, which should allow charging 80% of the battery capacity in less than half an hour. This access model can be associated with an electric motor of 116 or 135 hp of power.The most powerful version of this ID Polo uses batteries with a capacity of 52 kWh, which increase the car's theoretical range to 455 kilometers, and a DC charging capacity of up to 105 kW, allowing it to charge 80% of the battery in just 24 minutes. This superior version is associated with a 211 HP engine, which will have an electronically limited top speed of 160 km/h.

The brand does not rule out marketing a GTI version later on, which will maintain the same modular structure of engine and front-wheel drive, with no options to equip two engines or all-wheel drive systems. This GTI version should be very similar both in terms of mechanics and performance to the Cupra Raval VZ, with a specific tuning of suspensions, steering, and chassis that should differentiate it from the rest of the versions.
