The Catalan Traffic Service (SCT) will have a new tool to monitor the speed of drivers on the Catalan road network thanks to the purchase of six new state-of-the-art trailer-mounted (i.e., portable) radars. The purchase of these new radars has been authorized by the Catalan government and represents an expenditure of €2,156,797.93, which will be divided into two contracts attributable to the years 2025 (€1,033,092.25) and 2026 (€1,123,705.68).

The new trailer-mounted radars can operate autonomously, without needing to be plugged in or connected, and allow for simpler and faster management of potential speed violations. Thanks to their laser technology, they can track vehicle speeds for several meters and reliably determine their speed. Thanks to their internet connection, the corresponding fine can be issued immediately without the presence of a traffic officer. Furthermore, these new radars feature a durable, vandal-proof housing.

The SCT's plan is to position these trailer-mounted radars on sections of roads that experience the highest traffic incidents and accident rates over several days, both on high-capacity roads such as motorways and dual carriageways, and on particularly problematic sections of local and regional roads.

Reduction in accidents

The objective justifying the acquisition of these new speed cameras is to reduce the accident rate on the Catalan road network, since the Catalan Traffic Service points out that the places where it has installed radars have achieved a reduction in accidents of between 65% and 80%. The SCT points out that the radars will be placed in a visible place, always on the side of the road.
