Jaguar tries to be reborn with an expensive and disruptive electric car
The Type 01 is an electric car with 720 kilometers of range and a price of 165,000 euros
Jaguar has presented the controversial Type 01, an electric car that is set to mark a before and after in the history of the English brand. The fact is that Jaguar has undergone one of the most spectacular metamorphoses in the history of the automotive industry, attempting to transform a brand focused on a conservative client with a classic style into a disruptive and groundbreaking brand focused on a target audience very different from its historical market segment.
The Type 01 is the aesthetic and mechanical evolution of the Type 00 prototype presented in 2024, which sparked strong controversy among supporters (and especially detractors) of the brand's change in direction. The Type 01 is a large sedan – more than five meters long – manufactured at the Solihull plant in the United Kingdom, and it will debut the new JEA (Jaguar Electric Architecture) modular platform. Mechanically, the Type 01 will have 1,030 hp of power and 1,365 Nm of torque, and 118 kWh capacity batteries, which allow it to reach 720 kilometers of range, and more than 500 kilometers in driving conditions on highways or expressways at a sustained speed of 120 km/h.
The new Type 01 battery is compatible with an 850 V system, which will allow for supporting charging of up to 350 kW at a direct current point and recovering up to 321 kilometers of range in just 13 minutes.
A unique and distinctive aesthetic
But where the new Jaguar wants to make a difference compared to the models that the brand has manufactured in recent years is in the aesthetic section. The Type 01 is a car that is perceived as large and powerful, but with a predominance of geometric shapes and a certain tendency towards brutalism (understood as an artistic movement that develops large-scale works). Nothing to do with the popular F-Type or F-Pace that were so well received at the time, although they did not translate into good sales figures.
The front part of the new Type 01 remains presided over by optical groups formed by more than 20,000 individual LED lights and a large-dimension grille that leads into an elongated hood (perhaps exaggeratedly), which contrast with large-dimension wheels –attention, 23 inches!– that contribute to the sensation of grandeur.
The rear of the vehicle is resolved in a slightly different way, with a kind of cut-off tail in a coupe style and horizontal lights that run across the entire rear surface. To all this, we must add a small rear wing or spoiler that can vary its position in three different points depending on the vehicle's speed and a spectacular interior presided over by a gigantic instrument cluster with a 24-inch screen.
The first units of the Jaguar Type 01 will begin to be marketed during the first half of 2027 at a base price of 165,000 euros, a price range significantly higher than that of the English brand's conventional sedans before its metamorphosis.
