Cupra Barcelona, Cupra Begur, Cupra Embat, and Cupra Tramuntana: the latest Catalan brand names that Seat has patented.
Those from Baix Llobregat have registered several trade names linked to Catalonia that could be used to name future models of the brand.
Cupra continues to advance its roadmap to strengthen the aspirational brand from Baix Llobregat with new models. After naming some of its latest cars the Tavascan, Terramar, Formentor, Raval, and Born, and using the Tarraco name for a family SUV that Seat recently discontinued, on May 6, the Martorell-based company registered several trade names with the European Union (EU) intellectual property office in Spain.
Seat SA, the parent company of Seat and Cupra, has registered the trademarks Cupra Barcelona, Cupra Begur, and Cupra Tramuntana, in addition to the Catalan word Embat. Among the list of names registered this May, it is surprising that the Baix Llobregat company has also registered several names related to the Canary Islands, such as Famara, Tindaya, and Tagoro, as well as the appearance of the trademark Cupra Madrid as another brand name. Some of these names, such as Cupra Barcelona or Cupra Madrid, may refer to commercial spaces that the brand wants to secure rather than new models, and some internal sources confirm that currently the names Tindaya, Tagoro, and Begur are the most popular for naming future models of the brand.
The fact that parent company Seat SA has registered these brand names using the Cupra name and not the Seat name is also quite significant for the future of the aspirational brand, which seems destined to continue receiving the group's new commercial models to the detriment of the classic Seat. However, it should not be forgotten that in the past, Seat and Cupra have registered brand names that they ultimately did not use but to which they still retain the rights, such as Cupra Alborán, Seat Mínima, and Seat Burbuja, all of which were registered between 2018 and 2022 and which have never been chosen to name a model in the group. In 2023, Seat SA also registered the name Mundaka—without specifying whether for Seat or Cupra—which became another of the brand's brand names never used.
Among the names that may make the most sense within Cupra's commercial strategy, it's worth highlighting Tramuntana, which refers to the wind that characterizes the Empordà region but is also linked to the Cupra Formentor, named after the peak located at the end of the Tramuntana mountain range in the north of Mallorca. On the other hand, it doesn't seem coherent to name a model with the name Cupra Barcelona, especially considering that the brand already commercially uses two neighborhoods in the Catalan capital: El Born and El Raval. The name Cupra Begur seems an unlikely option at this point, although the names Tavascan and Terramar didn't seem to be the best positioned and were ultimately chosen. Finally, some media outlets suggest that the fact that Cupra's latest sports SUVs begin with the letter T (Tavascan and Terramar), and the fact that Canarian names have never been explored, may give the names Tindaya and Tagoro a certain advantage in the race to name the new Cupra models.
