BarcelonaThe board of directors of Inditex has appointed Marta Ortega, daughter of company founder Amancio Ortega, as the new chairwoman of the company, a position she will take up on 1 April 2022. She will replace Pablo Isla, who has held the presidency since 2011 and will still do so until March 31, as reported by the company to the National Securities Market Commission (CNMV).

The board also appoints Óscar García Maceiras as new CEO, until now secretary general of Inditex, who will take over from Carlos Crespo with immediate effect. At the same time, Javier Monteoliva Díaz will leave the position of deputy secretary to the board of directors and will become the company's new general secretary, as well as of the board's different committees.

With all these changes, the Board of Directors of the company culminates the process of generational handover that began in 2011 with the replacement of Amancio Ortega as Chairman of Inditex. All appointments will be submitted for ratification at the general shareholders' meeting.

"I would like to thank the board, and especially Amancio Ortega, for the support and trust placed in me during all these years. Now we believe that it is time to tackle this new stage, with Marta Ortega as Chairwoman and Óscar García Maceiras as CEO, the appointment of which was already expected since his incorporation to the company due to his capacity and qualities. Making this transition a reality is the culmination of my commitment to Inditex and to Amancio Ortega", Isla said.

On the other hand, the future Chairwoman of Inditex thanked Isla for his work. "I would like to highlight his immense contribution, not only to our group but also to the fashion industry in general," she said. "I have lived this company since my childhood and I have learnt from all the great professionals I have worked with over the last fifteen years. I have always said that I would dedicate my life to developing my parents' legacy, looking to the future but learning from the past and serving the company, our shareholders and our customers, wherever I am most needed," he added.

The new CEO has stated that he takes on his new role "with great responsibility and enthusiasm", "with the peace of mind of having a great team, full of youth, experience and talent".

Ortega's career

The new Inditex Chairwoman has worked in different departments inside the group in the past fifteen years, among them reinforcing Zara's brand image and fashion proposal, an area that she will continue to supervise. In this sense, campaigns have been carried out with prestigious creatives such as Steven Meisel, Fabien Baron, Karl Templer or Luca Guadagnino, and the launch of new premium collections including Zara SRPLS and Charlotte Gainsbourg by Zara.
