"I'm afraid of the world of finance"

The impersonator and comedian Xavi Espinosa explains his relationship with work and money

As a child, he imitated the actors from TV3's Polònia and the impersonators from Versió RAC1. What then seemed like a utopian dream, to dedicate himself to imitating public figures, has ended up becoming Xavi Espinosa's profession. Today he makes a living by voicing well-known characters.

Espinosa was born into a family involved in the management of commercial premises, although his father is a music enthusiast. For this reason, Xavi Espinosa learned to play the violin as a child: "This helped me a lot to train my ear. Capturing details well has helped me a lot to reproduce voices."

Since then, he has worked on the assembly line, currently at He considers that the best economic investment he has made has not been financial, but formative, paying for the course that opened the doors of radio to him. "The first interaction was in 2017, when I made an appearance on the radio imitating Luis Enrique, Andrés Iniesta, and Leo Messi," he explains in statements to Empreses. Since then, he has worked for the station, currently on El Matí de Catalunya Ràdio.

Regarding working conditions, he assures he feels fortunate: "I have the feeling that it has always been a well-paid job." However, he also warns that it is a very small sector. "Here in Catalonia, it's something that's liked a lot because there's a lot of tradition, and there are many impersonators, but this 'many' is in quotes, because it might mean 6 or 7 in all of Catalonia who make a living from it." In fact, he explains that most professionals in the sector combine various jobs and collaborations.

The most difficult thing about his profession is staying up-to-date: "Characters, as they are real people, evolve, change, disappear from the public sphere, and new ones appear." He also insists that imitation is more difficult than it seems. "There are many more characters I don't imitate than I do." And he adds: "There's a lot of groundwork, of trying things out, which perhaps people don't imagine as much." On the other hand, it is a "very uncertain" sector. "One day you can be left with nothing," he assures. However, so far he hasn't had to worry about a lack of work.

In the realm of personal finance, she ensures she has “a lot of awareness of money”. “I am constantly saving, although I don’t have a spreadsheet nor excessive control over my finances, I also like to be able to enjoy things". And she organizes herself with two accounts: “I have one for the most common expenses and another where I accumulate, the piggy bank”. Despite this, she assures that she has never invested “in stocks or properties”. “The world of finance scares me a little due to ignorance”.

Ant expenses

This prudence is also reflected in the way of consuming. “I have a loose hand with going for a coffee, with ant-like expenses,” he explains. But when it comes to making a significant expense, he looks at it closely: “I am very thorough in looking for the best possibility to ensure that that money is well spent.” For example, in buying a car: “I spent eight months looking at options, possibilities, quality, and price. So, I rarely regret the purchases I make, because I have thought about them a lot beforehand.”

Looking ahead, his great goal is to continue growing within the world of communication: “I would love to have my own show in the theater where I could imitate and where I could sing.” He would also like to expand his professional profile, be a communicator, and bet on social networks, where he has grown a lot in recent years.
