MADRIDThe Ministry of Social Rights has begun processing a new tender for the Imserso travel program, and this year it includes two important new features: a flat rate of €50 for pensioners with lower benefits, and the possibility of traveling with pets for the first time, as reported by the ministry in a press release. Since this initiative was launched 40 years ago, more than 4.6 million people have participated.

This year, of the 879,213 places available for this new campaign (2025-2026 period), a total of 7,447 will be reserved for people receiving a pension equal to or less than the non-contributory disability or retirement pension (€569.74). Offers for these places will not be limited by trip duration or destination. Those eligible will have to pay a flat rate of 50 euros for the trip, and the remaining costs will be covered by the Imserso (Spanish Social Security Institute). With this initiative, the ministry led by Pablo Bustinduy seeks to "offer more facilities" for people with fewer resources to travel.

Traveling with pets

The other major new feature of this year's tender is that for the first time, places will be offered so that pensioners who wish to travel with their pets can travel, always in compliance with regulations. However, these trips will be limited to those along the peninsular coast and island coasts, as explained by the ministry.

Breaking with seasonality

However, to help break the seasonality of the tourism sector, the new tender requires the winning companies to commit to avoiding the concentration of trips during the high season and on specific dates. In fact, trips during the high season will have a €100 surcharge compared to the low season (October, May, and June in the Peninsula and the Balearic Islands; and December, January, and February in the Canary Islands). In any case, the new tender for 2025-2026, which is expected to be published in the coming weeks, is higher, with the aim of ensuring that the winning companies "contribute to the sustainability of the sector and to improving the quality of the services offered."
