Catalonia receives 12.7% of state investment in 2020
The Ministry of Public Works and companies such as Adif and Renfe provide most of the state spending
BarcelonaThe State invested in Catalonia 957.23 million euros in 2020, according to the report Territorial distribution of state public sector investment, published on Friday by the General State Comptroller, attached to the Ministry of Finance. The figure, which includes only the territorialised investment data, represents 12.7% of the total invested in Spain, which totals 7,557.2 million euros, far from the contribution of Catalonia to the Spanish GDP, which stands at around 19%.
If we take into account the investments of the Spanish government in central services or abroad, the state figure rises to 10,773 million euros. In Catalonia, the expenditure of the ministries is 159.9 million euros, and that of public companies such as Adif or Renfe reaches 329.25 million and 93.7 million, respectively.
Of the almost 160 million euros of spending by the state administration in Catalonia during 2020, most was the Ministry of Public Works, with 138.5 million euros, followed by the Ministry of Ecological Transition, with 10.1 million. On the other hand, the lowest expenditure of the state administration in Catalonia was made by the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Tourism, with only 23,141 euros. However, these 159.9 million of real investment of the state administration in Catalonia are only 2.7% of the total investment of the state administration in the communities. Ahead of Catalonia are, for example, Galicia, with 304.9 million; Andalusia, with 225.6 million; Murcia, with 408 million; the Valencian Country, with 221.3 million; Aragon, with 264.5 million; Castile-La Mancha, with more than 619 million; Castile and Leon, with 330.3 million, and the community of Madrid, with more than 443 million euros.
Autonomous bodies
On the other hand, with respect to real investments of autonomous organisms and other entities that depend on the State administration, Catalonia is placed with 45.9 million in a much more leading situation, although it is surpassed by far by Andalusia, with 95 million euros and, above all, by Madrid, which is close to 305 million euros.
Of these 45.9 million euros invested in Catalonia, the vast majority corresponds to science, innovation and universities, basically the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC, High Centre for Scientific Investigations), which took 37.4 million.
The most important volume of investment in Catalonia is from state companies and foundations, including Adif, Renfe, the Consorci de la Zona Franca and RTVE in Catalonia, with an overall figure of 732 million euros.
