We make Catalan as exigible as Spanish

Being attractive and seductive with Catalan is very good, but it is much better to be essential. You don't need to be an independentist to join this goal, you just need to answer one question: do you care if Catalan disappears? If the answer is no, let's start working together.

From this ruling by the High Court of Justice of Catalonia against Catalan (I say “against Catalan” because it seeks to prevent our language from being “armored” in classrooms) a clear conclusion can be drawn: only a state of its own guarantees the legal protection that any official language has in its own territory. It shouldn't necessarily be this way: in a truly plurinational state, Catalan would be as Spanish as Castilian. But that's not the case, and I don't think I'm mistaken if I say it never will be. The only language we have a constitutional duty to know is Castilian. This is proclaimed by Article 3 of the 1978 Constitution, which at the end also states that “the different linguistic modalities of Spain” are a richness “that will be the object of special respect and protection”. Well, it's good that they protect Catalan!

Achieving Catalan to be as equally required as Castilian must be a political objective. An objective of almost minimal requirements, considering that the demographic and economic power of Castilian will always place it at an advantage. But only in this way will we achieve that millions of newcomers and their children are incorporated into the Catalan language if we don't want to become a national minority within Catalonia itself. As Carme Junyent said, there have never been so many potential Catalan speakers. Being attractive and seductive with Catalan is all well and good, but it's much better to be indispensable. This is already a clamor, an evidence.

You don't need to be an independentist to join this objective, you just need to answer one question: do you care if Catalan disappears? If the answer is no, let's start working together. Naturally, the first to be called upon to do this joint work must be the Catalan parties. In line with the tradition of political Catalanism, that is, of summing up. Of summing up and of ceasing to fight this battle with one hand tied behind our back.

Good morning.
