Antoni Bassas's analysis

Rubí Tunnel, 23 million euros. Next Generation fund for high-speed rail, 4.3 billion euros.

You have a modest tunnel through which some of the goods to and from the ports of Barcelona and Tarragona pass, and you're letting it fall into disrepair due to a lack of maintenance that wouldn't have cost you a fortune, compared to everything you spend on new construction. This is the brilliant management of the state railways in Catalonia.

The Renfe train drivers' strike lasted one day, because yesterday it was cancelled after negotiations between the unions and the ministry in Madrid.

The train drivers managed to make Monday even more chaotic than it already has been for days, months, and years. They flouted the minimum services decreed by the Generalitat, which still lacks control over the state-run rail system in our country. As a result, Renfe and Adif remain two discredited brands, still associated with chaos. Renfe suffers from decades of inefficiencies, while Adif is far more interested in new construction than maintenance. Consider this: in the agreement between the Ministry of Transport and the train drivers' unions, it was agreed that the ministry would increase maintenance spending by 77% by 2030. Question: what was the previous maintenance level that now requires a 77% increase? The answer, according to European Commission data, is that 84% of Spanish high-speed rail spending is dedicated to new infrastructure, and only 16% to maintenance. That's why they now have to increase it by 77%. Spain's high-speed rail binge has cost us dearly.

But there is still another quite significant piece of information: according to This information from the ARA which they sign today Cristina Martín Valbuena and Natalia VilaThe works to improve the Rubí tunnel will be extended for three years. The tunnel, through which goods arriving by sea at the port of Barcelona and those coming by train from the French border pass, will be under construction for three years, until 2029. It is a 900-meter tunnel, inaugurated in the 1980s to divert freight traffic away from Barcelona. The works will be extended until 2029 because trains will continue to run through it. Do you know the budget for the works? 23 million euros. Do you know how much money Adif and Adif Alta Velocidad have received from Next Generation funds? More than 4.3 billion euros. You have a modest tunnel through which some of the goods to and from the ports of Barcelona and Tarragona pass, and you let it fall into disrepair due to a lack of maintenance that wouldn't have cost a fortune, compared to everything you spend on new construction. This is the brilliant management of the State's railways in Catalonia.

Meanwhile, the PP isn't boasting about the result in Aragon. It can't, because this will end up with a PP-Vox coalition government, as will probably also happen in Extremadura. Therefore, Feijóo's strategy of capitalizing on the anti-Sánchez vote through regional elections isn't working. It's curious that the PP wins but can't brag, and the PSOE collapses while Sánchez remains in La Moncloa because he has no alternative.

And one piece of news we can't overlook before we finish: a judge in Barcelona has formally charged two former directors of the Civil Guard, Félix Vicente Azón and María Gámez, for the first time in connection with the Pegasus spyware used to spy on the Catalan independence movement, according to the EFE news agency. This all stems from a lawsuit filed by five of those affected by this spying, including businessman Joan Matamala, a former senator for Junts and a personal friend of Puigdemont. Last September the judge accepted this lawsuit because they considered that the reported events could constitute crimes of discovery and disclosure of computer secrets and illegal access to computer systems. According to the five victims, for two years, since 2019, their devices were attacked with Pegasus and Candiru –military-grade spyware capable of extracting chats, emails, passwords, files and photographs, and of remotely activating the microphone and camera–, and they estimate the attacks to be 78.
