Antoni Bassas' analysis: "Neither the commuter rail nor the tax agency will be successful unless they recruit the best managers."

The battle between PSOE and PP to have the Official State Gazette, the battle for power, is being played out on previously uncharted ground. Yesterday happened something that had never happened in Spain:

The State Attorney General will go to trialWe'll see the Attorney General in the dock, accused of leaking data about Isabel Díaz Ayuso's partner, specifically an email in which the president's partner admitted to committing a tax crime.

There is no solid evidence that the Attorney General was the author of the leak. Up to twenty people could have done so. In fact, there are witnesses who received the email who say it wasn't the Attorney General who leaked it. Of the three Supreme Court judges who made the decision to send the Attorney General to trial, one has issued a dissenting opinion stating there is no evidence, saying: "It is not possible to attribute the leak to him with any minimal justification." Obviously, Sánchez defends the Attorney General, Feijóo calls for his resignation, and we will witness the incredible scene of an Attorney General accused by one of his subordinates.

It's clear that this is a political issue, that politics in Spain is conducted in the form of a siege of power, and that the Attorney General, if he were a chess player, would be like killing the queen.

Meanwhile, this headline of ours today couldn't explain it better:

Isla and Sánchez go on vacation without resolving the issue of unique financing. Yesterday, the Catalan government and the Catalan Left agreed on an adaptation of the Catalan Tax Agency so that the Agency has autonomy over its staff and more effective governance.

And, from China, Isla has insisted that there will certainly be one-off financing. This comes on the same day that the public company Cercanías Catalunya was approved.

However, whether we're talking about the Tax Agency or the Commuter Rail System, and in general any service of the Generalitat (Catalan Government), having the powers is only the first step. The second, and most important, step is putting the best talent to use them. And this includes recruiting the most competent people by going to the market to compete for the best. Excellent administration demands excellence, hard-working, committed, visionary, and capable people. We've had enough of politically appointed positions of trust, which return a portion of their public salaries to the party.
