Historically in Catalonia, 'masovers' were peasant families who lived in a farmhouse that did not belong to them, in exchange for working the land, looking after the livestock, and guarding the property. However, in recent years, a new form of 'masoveria' has emerged, adapted to modern times: 'masovers' are responsible for rehabilitating and renovating a dilapidated farmhouse that is not their property, and in return, they can live there for years without paying rent. This formula of reciprocal exchange allows families who do not have the necessary resources to make their dream of living in the countryside a reality, while at the same time preventing ancestral homes, often inherited, from deteriorating and losing valuable architectural heritage. A win-win according to the rules.
