There is an entire generation that if you say to them "If you wanna be my lover" they will automatically and inevitably answer "you gotta get with my friends". And this is thanks to the Spice Girls, who this week celebrated thirty years since they turned the world upside down with their triumphant appearance: a single called Wannabe. They were the dose of modernity that pop needed at the time. A group of empowered friends –when no one used this adjective yet– singing an ode to friendship and to putting a stop to sexism. All this in a dance-pop format and with a whole associated British aesthetic that was then synonymous with fresh exoticism.
