The match between Argentina and Cape Verde will be remembered as the years go by. If the World Cups are exciting, it's because of matches like these, when logic breaks down, when anything can happen. On a humid and sticky night in Miami, modest Cape Verde came within a whisker of eliminating Argentina in a tie decided in overtime where anything and everything happened. Goals, tackles, and a player climbing into the stands. In the end, the reigning champions managed to survive after a very demanding duel against a Cape Verde team that heads home with their heads held high, having become one of the most beautiful stories of the tournament (3-2). Nobody knew them, and now everyone admires them.

It was supposed to be Spain's and Lamine Yamal's day, but it was Josimar Dias Vozinha's, a nickname that in Portuguese sounds very similar to "grandmother". It was a fairy tale. One of those stories that, if a screenwriter invented it to make a television series, many would say it's impossible to believe. Sometimes it seems that in this modern football full of money where the rich get richer and richer, it's not possible for a 40-year-old man without a team to shine against Lamine Yamal, Ferran Torres, Pedri, and company. But at the Football World Cup, luckily, these things still happen. No 40-year-old goalkeeper had ever managed to finish a World Cup match without conceding goals. Vozinhaachieved it.

Spain, with four Blaugrana players in the starting eleven –Cubarsí, Pedri, Gavi and Ferran–, was unable to break the deadlock (0-0) against Cape Verde, a country with just over half a million inhabitants. Vozinha was the hero for his team against a Spanish side that, even with the introduction of Lamine Yamal twenty minutes from the end, could not change the outcome of the match.

"It's a tremendous joy and something that almost seemed impossible," highlights Valdo (Villaseca de Laciana, León; 1981), former Espanyol player and player for the Cape Verde national team. He speaks of the feat of this African archipelago, one of the four debutants in this World Cup and Spain's first opponent this Monday in the group stage (6 PM, La 1). Cape Verde, a former Portuguese colony, is the second smallest country in the tournament's history by territory and the third by population with 4,000 km² and 600,000 inhabitants.
