New ruling against Catalan in schools. The Supreme Court (TS) has ruled that Spanish cannot be excluded from the signage of public educational centers in Catalonia. Following an appeal filed by the Assembly for a Bilingual School of Catalonia, with the support of the Prosecutor's Office, against a ruling by the High Court of Justice of Catalonia (TSJC), the Supreme Court now annuls a section of a document on the organization and management of educational centers for the 2022/23 academic year, which stated that "the signage of the center's spaces is in Catalan, Occitan in Aran, and in Catalan Sign Language if applicable, which are the reference languages of the educational system".

The requirement of C2 level Catalan for new teachers will not be effective next academic year. Education has once again suspended the obligation to have this certificate due to a lack of qualified individuals who can "guarantee the right to education", as confirmed by the department to ARA. While it was announced in December that all teachers wishing to enter the teaching pool for the 2026-2027 academic year would have to prove their C2 Catalan, this Thursday a resolution published in the Official Gazette of the Generalitat goes back and modifies the linguistic conditions for interim staff.

New blow from justice to Catalan in schools. This Monday, the Superior Court of Justice of Catalonia (TSJC) has ordered the provisional execution of the ruling it issued last September, in which it annulled a dozen articles of the decree to protect Catalan in schools. A norm that Pere Aragonès's government approved in 2024 and that only a month later the courts suspended it, which is why it had never been applied. In fact, sources from the Department of Education have assured that Monday's ruling will not mean any change in the day-to-day of Catalan classrooms.
