El Vendrell has sold all 35 winning tickets for the top prize in the New Year's Eve lottery, number 1379. The winning number is drawn on the last day of the year. A total of seven million euros has been distributed across the 35 series sold from a tobacconist's shop on Café Street in the capital of the Baix Penedès region. Winners will receive 200,000 euros for each ticket played. The winning combination demonstrates, once again, that chance doesn't discriminate based on numbers, and that all the balls in the lottery drum have the same chance. "It's a number that not everyone buys because it has a zero in front of it, and it's one you wouldn't normally choose, but sometimes those numbers that we're not used to buying come up," explained Marc Latorre, who owns the shop with his mother. Rosa Sabater has been running the shop for forty years and had never sold such a large winning ticket before. "I'm semi-retired, but I still do a little work, and the other day, jokingly, I said, 'I'll retire the day I win the jackpot,'" she exclaimed. For now, part of that prediction has come true.
