Since Arthur Conan Doyle created him at the end of the 19th century, the character has caused a sensation, and there have even been real investigators who wanted to imitate his methods. When the author decided that the detective should die in what would be the last novel, The final problemThis caused a great uproar among readers, who protested and wore mourning clothes. Even the English crown expressed its displeasure. Doyle was forced to revive it ten years later in The Empty House Adventure And since then, Holmes has continued to live on in novels and short stories, as well as in series and films, evolving from pipe and magnifying glass to mobile phones and the internet.

Beyond writing it, Gatiss also stars in it: he plays Gabriel Book, the owner of a secondhand bookstore in 1946 London. Aside from his work, Book has a hobby that takes up almost more of his time than selling books: with the complicity of his wife, he helps the police solve crimes. According to Gatiss, the bookstore setting functions as a kind of "analog computer." "The answer to the mystery is there, somewhere," the creator explained to the series' director. Guardian.
