The most critical point of the Les Gavarres fire is the right flank, as, if it breaks loose over Puig d'Arques, it could cover thousands of hectares of forest land all the way to Girona. Where the most tense moments have been experienced, however, has been on the left flank, close to the urban areas of Calonge and Santa Cristina d'Aro. On Friday afternoon and night, the flames, pushed by the sea breeze, descended to the edge of the houses and the residents spent hours in authentic terror. In the urbanizations of Cabanyes and Mas Toi, residents fled in their cars, spent the night in the open, and the fire burned a house, gateways, gardens, and fences.

A group from the ARA Premium Club has enjoyed a day in Calonge. The activity began with a walk through the historic center of the town, just as the numerous bookstores were opening ("Calonge, town of books" is a slogan that has become popular) and when the people of Calonge were going to the outdoor market stalls. The participants stopped for a good while in front of a large mural by Pilarín, and reviewed the main elements of Calonge it contains.

"Long live Spain and long live the king." With timpani, trumpets blasting, and eighty soldiers, the swearing-in ceremony of the Spanish flag was held this Saturday in Calonge and Sant Antoni, a municipality governed by a Junts mayor, Jordi Soler. The "Thank you, Mayor" said by the army commander in the province of Girona, Colonel Javier Gómez Yagüe, however, did not refer to Soler. He was referring to Alberto Mas Vilà, a PP councilor and member of the governing team, who was acting mayor this Saturday and the highest civil authority present. He organized the swearing-in ceremony, pulling all the strings to secure permission from the City Council to use the Palau Firal for the occasion, the eve of Hispanic Heritage Day. That's why the City Council seal appeared on the posters announcing the event.
