This is the advice of sources at the Royal Household consulted by ARA, who believe that to "safeguard his image and reputation from speculation and potential criticism, and consequently, the image of the Crown, he should regain his tax residency in Spain." This would automatically mean paying taxes to the Spanish state and, therefore, returning to the scrutiny of the Spanish tax authorities. But in the case of the former king, there are other implications beyond contributing to the public coffers.

It's very simple: when you sit down first thing in the morning to analyze the news, you have to use several lenses: the microscope, to see details that might go unnoticed but are and will be fundamental; the wide-angle lens, to see everything in its entirety; and the telescope, to see further and gain perspective. And then, after everything has been recounted and debated, you have to choose and prioritize the facts. Well, today, after examining the most important news stories from every angle, I've come to the conclusion that I can only tell you that this is a stinking mess.

For a couple of hours, the State suspended the official mourning period, and TVE switched from the continuous feed of Franco's lying in state to the broadcast of the oath of office from the Congress, then the Spanish Parliament. Juan Carlos, who was 37 years old, swore by God and on the Gospels to uphold the principles of the National Movement. He was dressed in military uniform. He looked tired and distraught, overwhelmed by the weight of responsibility.

The death of dictator Francisco Franco marked a turning point in Spanish history: shortly afterward, the dictatorship came to an end, and the path to democracy began. Franco's demise also meant the restoration of the Spanish monarchy with Juan Carlos I—untainted by the legacy of the previous monarch, Alfonso XIII—as king. In just under two weeks, the 50th anniversary of the dictator's death will be commemorated, and the Spanish government has prepared a series of events to mark this golden jubilee of freedom. But the emeritus king, who played a prominent role in the Transition, will not participate. Pedro Sánchez's government has decided not to invite him. The announcement to exclude the former monarch from the festivities coincided with the publication in France this week of the memoirs of the emeritus king – who retired to Abu Dhabi five years ago due to the scandals that led to his abdication – in which he defends the Franco regime.

Juan Carlos de Borbón is not a victim of anything; on the contrary, he squandered his fortune. I don't know of any politician who has been more beloved by the people and more protected by the media than Juan Carlos. If his son now lives 7,500 kilometers away, it's because Juan Carlos himself ruined his reputation with behavior for which he escaped punishment only because he was politically irresponsible.

"The struggles over the memory of Carlist commemorations within public spaces were very present until the Civil War; after that, they were completely buried, because the memorial landscape changed radically. This neglect leads to the maintenance of biased stereotypes or simplified visions," adds the historian who, together with the Patronat de la V y X, leads the Institut Ramon Muntaner, a research project on the material and symbolic memory left by the Third Carlist War in Catalonia. Cao does not consider Carlism to be an anecdotal or marginal movement, but rather a widespread phenomenon also in urban environments, since there were armed Carlist groups that operated in Mataró, Igualada, Terrassa, and Granollers. "The Carlist Wars are not only dynastic conflicts, but are part of a dialectic of revolution and counterrevolution that accompanies the construction of the contemporary world. Studying them helps us understand the politicization of the working classes, the construction of the liberal Spanish state, and the creation of collective imaginaries with the capacity for endurance," he adds.
