Immediately, New York's unique character acted as a temper to certain enthusiasms: a cosmopolitan and singular city, with its own world and life, nothing like the heartland of America. And so a familiar refrain was repeated: what happens in New York is not representative of the country but rather for internal consumption, typical of a city open to the world and pleased with itself.

Because its connection to the country is relative, like letting the air flow, a kind of living apart together that binds and liberates her at the same time; her identity is not based on a tradition exactly shared with the rest. It does not come from the past but from the future, not from the backcountry but from frontierMore than a distinct culture, it's based on a shared energy, a temperament: speed, ambition, diversity, and practical tolerance. The city offers opportunities, not roots. That's why the streets and avenues have no names, but they do have a soul. That's why it aims so high and looks so little at the ground. The idea is that it's a place where everyone can be themselves without having to participate in a... us Previously. And this, which may seem like a lack of identity, is paradoxically its hallmark.

Catalonia is in turmoil amidst the independence movement, on the cusp of a summer that would mark a turning point in Catalan politics. But while the discussion focuses on the October 1st referendum, Barcelona En Comú, led by then-mayor Ada Colau, organizes a municipal summit that brings together 180 cities and some 700 activists from the international left in the Catalan capital. This is Fearless Cities, an event that will later expand to the United States and Europe. There, a connection is forged that will be key to BComú's mobilization strategy from then on: that of the Working Families Party (WFP), a like-minded organization. to the new mayor of New York, Zohran Mamdaniand a new hope for the left in a time of rising far-right sentiment. The first contact occurred when Colau became mayor, at the request of this party, due to the victory of the BComú candidacy in the 2015 elections. However, the relationship between the two groups grew even closer in the lead-up to the 2019 campaign, when Colau managed to retain her position thanks to the PSC's Ernest Maragall.

This 34-year-old American, a self-proclaimed socialist of Muslim origin, has managed to connect with the youth vote and offer a glimmer of hope to the Democratic Party, although it would be a mistake to think that the results can be extrapolated to the entire United States. Through resources also used by the far right—social media, simple messages, and promises difficult to keep—he secured victory, but the key to his discourse has been to put the material conditions of the population, especially housing, back at the center. This is an issue that has not been central to the Democratic Party's discourse in recent years; otherwise, it's difficult to explain why Trump won the election as he did. Mamdani offers a formula for fighting the far right, which is to talk about affordability.

The victory of Zohran Mamdani, a 34-year-old Muslim candidate who identifies as a "socialist"—a taboo word in the United States—in the New York City mayoral election represents a true political earthquake for the country, with consequences that are still too early to fully grasp. On the one hand, it represents a victory for the most radical and nonconformist wing of the Democratic Party against the New York liberal establishment that had always dominated it. This election, like that of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez as a member of the House of Representatives in its day, deepens American political polarization, a scenario in which Donald Trump has already shown he is comfortable. But there is something very interesting about Mamdani's victory that will have to be followed closely. His campaign was not based on the so-called "culture war" but rather focused on people's basic needs, primarily housing and public transportation. That is why he defines himself as a "socialist democrat" and does not so much fit the profile of a progressive that the right tries to discredit with that adjective. wokeFocusing on people's real problems and running a dynamic, energetic, and even entertaining campaign has achieved what seemed impossible just a few months ago: Manhattan, home to some of the world's greatest fortunes, voted overwhelmingly for a "socialist" candidate. It also highlights that New York's problems are the same as those faced by any other metropolis in the world, including Barcelona: how to ensure that its inhabitants can live with dignity and are not forced out of cities that have increasingly become tourist attractions and hubs for real estate speculation.

We'll see if Mamdani's victory creates a wave, but we note that the next, almost certain victory of the far right is not some inescapable, biblical doom, and that people have listened to other proposals. Perhaps some will think that we've seen this program before and that, in the long run, socialism doesn't work because it impoverishes. It will be up to the centrist parties to demonstrate that a dialogue between money and the common good is possible.

When a bright spot opens in a dark political moment, it's worth celebrating. A successful shared leadership experience has both surprised and excited many people affected by so-called "democratic fatigue." On June 13, Zohran Mamdani and Brad Lander, Chief Financial Officer of the City of New York, announced a cross-endorsementMamdani asked his voters to vote for Lander as a second candidate, and Lander, in turn, did the same for Mamdani. The two were vying to win the Democratic Party nomination for mayor of New York, but their rivalry didn't prevent a close alliance. If one of them was eliminated, the other's votes would flow directly to the incumbent candidate, strengthening his position. Together, they were much stronger than apart: Lander brought political structure, his base in Brooklyn, and enormous experience; Mamdani ran a vibrant campaign among young people, immigrants, and progressive communities.
