This is the conclusion reached by professionals at Vall d'Hebron Hospital after diagnosing a dozen cases of dermatophilosis in recent months, a rare skin infection in humans caused by bacteria associated with animals, especially livestock such as horses, goats, and cows. This time, however, professionals believe that transmission has been from person to person through sexual contact, far from the animals that generally cause contagion and the tropical areas where this disease is more frequent.

The good sea conditions have meant that the ship is making good progress and this Friday it was said that the vessel would arrive on Saturday afternoon and not Sunday morning, as had been planned. Despite this advancement, the night will be allowed to pass before the machinery is started to disembark the 151 people on board, counting 147 passengers and crew and four professionals who boarded in Cape Verde to assist them. For the moment, the toll of the outbreak remains at five confirmed infections, in addition to the three who have died, and the World Health Organization (WHO) is confident that no more passengers will test positive.

Thus, there is only one possible contagion under consideration — that of the woman from Alicante — which will need to be confirmed or ruled out with a microbiology test.

It is usually treatable and causes few complications. A fairly common yeast infection is one that occurs in the vagina and involves itching, redness, and discomfort, as well as abnormal vaginal discharge. In fact, there are different factors that can lead to fungal growth: especially humidity and heat.

All are pathogens, can cause illness in humans, and were detected in environmental samples of water, mud, and soil taken during the first three weeks after the downpours. Some can be fatal, the researchers warn, while others cause nothing more than diarrhea. Researchers will continue analyzing samples from the area for two or three more years, as there are potential risks of individual infections or long-term epidemics. This is intended to facilitate hospital diagnoses and contribute to the improvement of prevention protocols for similar disasters.
