On November 21, 2000, ETA assassinated former Socialist minister Ernest Lluch in Barcelona, ​​in the garage of his home. This Friday marks the 25th anniversary of that assassination, and one of his daughters, Rosa Lluch, director of the history and archaeology department at the University of Barcelona, ​​speaks to ARA.

This week we commemorate the deaths of two individuals who have been significant figures in history, both in Catalonia and in Spain. November 20th marked the 50th anniversary of the death of Francisco Franco, and, coincidentally, November 21st marks the 25th anniversary of the death of Ernest Lluch. The former died in bed, surrounded by loved ones, after a long month of heart problems and a painful final agony. The latter died alone in a parking lot, assassinated by an ETA commando. This stark contrast is one of the contradictions, but that is not what I wish to address. Rather, I want to reflect on some aspects that arise from this coincidence.

The possible removal of the name of former Catalan Health Minister Ernest Lluch, murdered by ETA, from the new specialist center in the Campanar neighborhood of Valencia was one of the most tense moments of the Valencian government's oversight session this Thursday.

"They wanted Valencian self-government on the day of the democratic rupture." This inspiring maxim, recorded in a 1975 police report and recalled by former Valencian minister Vicent Soler, exemplified the infusion of pride and memory felt by the Socialist leaders who attended this Thursday's anniversary celebration of a pivotal episode in the restoration of democracy.
