Who is Òscar Playà, the CEO of the new Cercanías Cataluña?

Òscar Playà, the current director of the Barcelona metro network (TMB), will be the new CEO of Cercanías Cataluña, the new company that will take over the Cercanías operationThis was explained by the President of the Generalitat, Salvador Illa, and the Minister of Transport and Mobility, Óscar Puente, who on Monday morning formally established the new company, which will also be officially registered before a notary this week. The presidency of the new Cercanías Catalunya will also be held by a Catalan, the Minister of Territory, Sílvia Paneque. These are, therefore, the two names that will lead the board of directors of this joint venture (formed by the Generalitat and Renfe, i.e., the State) and which has the mandate to operate – and improve – both Cercanías and Regional services from now on. Sources from the Ministry of Territory said that Playà "was the best option" due to her more than 20 years of experience "leading complex organizations" and her "extensive knowledge of the railway sector." Since 2021, Playà has served as general manager of the TMB metro network. He had previously worked at the ATM as director of T-mobility, and from now on, according to the Catalan government, he will become "more involved in the management and direction of the company."

The budgets that are drafted and approved end up being worthless, since what is spent—and, therefore, the money that reaches the country—falls far short of initial projections. Today, Transport Minister Óscar Puente acknowledged "disinvestment" in the commuter rail network and asserted that the Catalan network is, "without any reservations," the most deteriorated rail infrastructure in the entire country: "It is the oldest network in every sense and the one that has suffered the worst treatment," the minister stated. ERC (Republican Left) claims to be the first minister to acknowledge a lack of investment, which is why it sees Puente's words as "a great step," while Junts (Junts) criticizes him for not investing enough to reverse the time lost in previous years.

Famous names like Àlex Valle, Nico González, and Ilaix Moriba have had to seek a place elsewhere in exchange for a transfer. This formula has generated close to €200 million over the last 10 years. Both Josep Maria Bartomeu (2015-2020) and Joan Laporta (2021-2025) have used La Masia to make ends meet. Now, a potential transfer for Marc Casadó, a situation the Vallecas native would like to avoid, would allow Laporta to surpass the €100 million mark in sales of youth-trained players during the current term.

Both parties explained that the new company will remain in the hands of Renfe, which will hold 50.1% of the shares, and the Generalitat, 49.9%. However, to offset the power struggle, the board of directors—which directs day-to-day operations—will have a greater Catalan presence: five of the nine directors, including the president, will be nominated by Salvador Illa's government, while the remaining four will be from Renfe, one of which will eventually be transferred to the workers' representatives.
