This novel was born during a conversation among friends after a meal, inspired by the testimony of one of their mothers. It's an unknown, harsh, and anonymous story that portrays the inner workings of families who "lived well" under the Franco regime in Girona. It also marks the debut in the genre of lawyer Benet Salellas, former CUP deputy and currently leading the defense of Santos Cerdánand a finalist for the 45th Justo M. Casero Short Novel Prize. "I think we all tend to write what we like to read," he explains about the project's genesis. "I love fiction; I studied Greek philology before studying law. I've always had a bit of a cultured side, and I was challenged to try to write a novel. I wanted it to be anonymous, so if it's validated, I'll feel more empowered in some way."

Setback for Santos Cerdán. The Constitutional Court (TC) has rejected the former Socialist leader's appeal for protection of constitutional rights, which sought the suspension of the pretrial detention he has been serving since June. According to the high court's statement on Monday, the decision was made unanimously by its members at the proposal of the reporting judge, José María Macías Castaño.

If one piece of news raised eyebrows in the midst of the Santos Cerdán case, just after the UCO report was released, it was the decision of the former PSOE number three to choose lawyer Benet Salellas to defend him in the court case. Until that day, Cerdán's lawyer was Gonzalo Martínez-Fresneda, who works for the PSOE, but with the dismissal of all his positions, he had to opt for his own strategy. Few expected him to hire a former CUP deputy in the Catalan Parliament, key to the 2017 laws disengaging from the Proceso and also the lawyer for the leader of Òmnium, Jordi Cuixart, during the Proceso trial. What was the connection between the two? How did Cerdán get to Salellas? Why did the lawyer, known for his human rights cases, agree to defend the former PSOE number three?

In his petition demanding Santos Cerdán's release, his lawyer, Benet Salellas, outlines a line of defense that is not typical in corruption cases and which, in fact, closely resembles that followed by most of those convicted in the Proceso (Trial), or, more precisely, that followed against Latori Borràs, and that followed Laura Borràs, focusing on presenting their case as a case of political persecution. The manual that Salellas applies, and which so far has not yielded a satisfactory result for his client, is to claim that there is a "general case" whose objective is "to investigate to see if solid evidence emerges linking him to any criminal activity."

Santos Cerdán, who has been in pretrial detention since Monday afternoon, requested his provisional release this Thursday. In the appeal filed by his lawyer, former CUP member of Parliament Benet Salellas, a defense strategy implemented from the outset that combines strictly judicial and political aspects is clearly outlined. "The case combines aspects related to his political life. Therefore, it is logical that in the explanations offered by the person under investigation, he also seeks reasons for his procedural status in the political world," he argues in the document, claiming that Cerdán's situation is due—according to the complaint—to his having been "the architect of progressive governments in Spain." testify at his appearance before the Supreme Court.

Santos Cerdán makes a move to defend himself in the alleged corruption case involving the PSOE.
