The work of Banksy It never fails to provoke a reaction. The artist (or artists) behind that name creates stencil paintings brimming with social and political commentary, all from a position of anonymity. Their interventions appear on walls, streets, squares, and public spaces worldwide, and each work sparks social debate. Their career has taken them to Paris, New York, Bethlehem, London, and Bristol, the British city where they have left some of their most recognizable murals in the early hours of the morning. The themes are diverse: from critiques of war and social inequality to ironic graffiti about consumer society and politics.

Starting this Wednesday, Barcelona's Nou Barris district becomes an urban art laboratory where local and international artists will create up to seventeen large-format works, including paintings, sculptures, and light installations. The project, titled NOU Sentit Urbà, aims to "generate new attractions in the district and foster a sense of belonging and identity in the neighborhood," according to Barcelona City Council. Therefore, residents can get involved in the creative process. The artists were selected by a committee of experts.

If all goes well during this Saint John's Eve festival, San Andrés de la Barca will purify evil spirits with bonfires and will also debut the giant murals that seven artists are currently painting in different parts of this town in Baix Llobregat. The goal is not only to have an aesthetic impact on the party walls where the muralists are working, but the idea is to "recover and reclaim local identity" through art, explains Ramon Ferrer, Culture Technician at the City Council.
