An unacceptable game on public television

https://en.ara.cat/media/an-unacceptable-game-public-television_129_5669280.html

Top Chef It's the new baking competition on La 1, from the creators of MasterChefOn Wednesday, they proposed a game to the contestants that was full of prejudice. The jury presented the participants with exquisitely crafted desserts. They were delicious little cakes made with black sesame and currants, with golden touches. They were made by a pastry chef of Chinese origin, who wonderfully fuses French and Far Eastern pastry techniques. The suspicious "but" in the middle of the sentence already grated and foreshadowed the absurdity. As if the French touch were what truly elevated the pastry. They proposed that the contestants prepare the same desserts and announced:You'll have the help of the creator! Let's welcome the pastry chef who created these tarts!"But, to everyone's surprise, three Chinese women appeared on set, not one. Even more dismaying was discovering the reason:"We want to test your intuition. If you guess which of these three women is the creator of these Asian-fusion tarts, you'll have her help for one minute at a time of your choosing."They had to guess the correct Chinese character."The camera showed the three women, side by side. Numbers 1, 2, and 3 were pinned to their shirts, and they were given a clue: beyond the pastry chef, another was a violinist, and the third an extra. The last two were only there to mislead and create confusion in the "guess the correct Chinese woman" game. The test was reminiscent of the most racist games of The anthill. They asked the girls to show their hands. They eliminated the first one by having her play the violin, and ultimately, they were wrong in their choice. Up until then, they hadn't even bothered to announce the pastry chef's name or her professional qualifications, as they had done the previous week with a chef. They gave no professional background whatsoever on Tian Lu.The program implicitly activated a mechanism identified by multiple studies on racism: the supposed interchangeability of racialized bodies. The test reinforced the Western racist prejudice that all Asians look alike. It subtly played on the premise that it's difficult to distinguish between three Chinese women, stimulating a kind of perceptual challenge. Turning this bias into a game is to normalize it to absolutely unacceptable levels. The test wasn't based on culinary skill but on the ability to identify different faces. Furthermore, the idea amplified the exoticization of the pastry chef and obscured her professional competence. Would they have taken three French chefs and made them show their hands and play the violin? Would they have hired a Frenchman who was a bit of a showman just to throw people off the scent? With a French pastry chef, would they have simply stated his first name without acknowledging his expertise? Making racialized people lose their individuality is a way of dehumanizing them and turning them into mere tools at the service of the program. It is very serious that a public television station tolerates this.

In fact, this is a determining factor for the format: it conveys to the viewer the idea that they are accessing a higher level of entertainment than what is usually found on television. They justify this with musical education. There is a constant effort to explain to the audience that opera, despite seeming like a genre for connoisseursIt's accessible and can move everyone. Furthermore, commentator Mario Marzo points out the red flags of certain plots and characters that represent the most egregious machismo in opera. To the relational dynamics, one must add the overdoses of emotional sugar and confection that these shows require. Since the world of opera already has a certain tendency towards affectation, it all feels very much its own. The three members of the jury display a delicacy and sensitivity in their approach that transforms the final verdict of sending heads rolling into a magnanimous and somewhat contrived art.

https://en.ara.cat/media/another-nonsense-la1_129_5454322.html

The vulgarity that La 1 premiered on Wednesday night is once again inexplicable and unacceptable on public television.Anything to declare? is one dating show in bad taste. And not only because of the nonsense said and the outdated approach, but because of the stereotypes it reinforces on a network that should prioritize destroying them. The program recreates the universe of a supposed airport of love. The presenter, Pablo Chiapella—famous for being the Amador of The one that is coming–, is dressed as an airplane pilot and has a crew of flight attendants who look like they've come from a cabaret show. All the most outdated and typical television tricks are concentrated in its format. In less than three minutes, they said the word "whatever" fifteen times. love, and every time they said it, a song from Julio Iglesias' repertoire played, repeating the word. Throughout the program, they try to form three couples, whether heterosexual or homosexual. The casting is worthy of a reality guys The Island of Temptations either Big Brother. Young, hegemonic bodies, highly trained at the gym, maximum hedonism and minimum naturalness. Each single man or woman can choose between three candidates, each loaded with suitcases. Each suitcase hides a supposed defect. And through an elimination process, they end up forming a couple or not.Anything to declare? follows the most frivolous and topical script guidelines of the reality shows when introducing the contestants: "If I want something, I get it.", "I have this great body because I work hard for it.", "When I enter a nightclub the floor shakes", "I'm very aware of my attractiveness and I'm not ashamed to admit it. I'm attractive and I know it.", "A whirlwind like me deserves a tall, badass guy."And the statements that appear inside each suitcase are as vulgar as they are ridiculous:"I've had 18-hour sex sessions", "I've had sex with over a hundred women.", "I need to have sex at least once a day." either "I am Mr. Blunderbuss". To this last sentence the presenter, surprised, added: "I have stayed 'squashed'In the set, there's a luggage conveyor belt where witnesses appear. And to top it all off, on two occasions, the mothers of two candidates appeared, carried like a package. After saying a few words about his overprotective style, they were dragged away on the conveyor belt. dating show, but for the values and stereotypes it preaches. It reinforces a world of relationships that's very outdated. The game is constantly unpacking suitcases. But the most dangerous is the one that's filling Televisión Española with its entertainment. The amount of accumulated waste is becoming unbearable for a public broadcaster, and yet they keep piling it on even more. There's only one thing to declare: TVE management thinks it's maneuvering to get the plane off the ground, but it's doing everything it can to crash it.

It was a fleeting aside, only available to those who watch television closely. One of the news items explained that, this year, The habanera singing of Palafrugell would not end with My grandfather as was the tradition until now. And they explained the reason: "To José Luis Ortega Monasterio, the author, the documentary Walls of silence 3Cat linked him to a case of sexual exploitation that the family denies." And then they inserted some archive images of the Palafrugell public singing The beautiful Lola and waving handkerchiefs in the wind. The short fragment of the song they selected for the headline was, precisely, "Oh what a placeeeeer... I felt." The choice, premeditated or unconscious, made it inevitable to smile. That after recalling the discovery of Walls of silence about Ortega Monasterio, which allegedly linked him to a sexual exploitation network, the choice of these verses to close the news is somewhat comical. Be that as it may, the subtlety is appreciated. Considering the amount of tragic news we see on 3/24, it's good that they've given us this wink with such sly humor.
