Because as a black comedy about the behavior of ordinary American citizens in specific situations, Eddington fair. And be careful, because that would still be a benevolent analogy. If instead of the perspective of satire, one wants to evaluate Ari Aster's new film as an allegory of the United States based on the events that take place in the microcosm of a small town, as John Sayles, for example, has done repeatedly (Lone Star, The Promised Land, Silver City…), then the comparison would be bloody.

The protagonist, Lucy (Dakota Johnson), works at a dating agency and is torn between improving her financially and socially through marriage to Harry (Pedro Pascal) or staying with her childhood sweetheart, John (Chris Evans), who is eking out a living in a shared apartment. In Lucy's world, the American dream has been definitively destroyed: the only way to advance financially or achieve financial security is no longer through merit, but through marriage.

That Marvel hadn't been able to make a cinematic version of the Fantastic Four with a face and eyes was unforgivable. Neither version (crappy, like the one produced by Roger Corman in 1994, or bland, broken, and ugly like those directed by Tim Story and Josh Trank in the 21st century) did justice to the greatness of this family of superheroes who were the core of Marvel, the pure essence of the charming power of gripping comics. In the end, the closest thing the Fantastic Four had on film was... The Incredibles, which wasn't from Marvel and wasn't them, but was a superpowered family with almost the same charisma as the unit formed by Reed Richards, Ben Grimm and siblings Sue and Johnny Storm.

Ari Aster points in this direction in Eddington, the debut in the official competition at the Cannes Film Festival of the director of Hereditary (2018) and Midsommar (2019), who after being acclaimed as a master of modern horror in his first films seems determined to expand his scope. He already did so in the dislocated existential comedy Beau is scared (2023) and repeats the play in Eddington imprinting an overtly satirical and misanthropic tone on the story, which follows a rather bungling sheriff (Joaquin Phoenix) with a dysfunctional marriage as he clashes with his town's mayor during the early days of the coronavirus pandemic.
