The unsettled weather continues unabated, and the Iberian Peninsula has already suffered the effects of up to six major storms over the past month. The latest is Storm KristinThe snowfall is significantly complicating the weather situation across the country this Wednesday. Snow, rain, and strong gusts of wind have triggered alerts in all autonomous communities except Navarre and the Canary Islands. The snowfall is particularly disrupting travel: in Madrid, the A-6 highway is closed to traffic between Guadarrama and Aravaca, and dozens of vehicles are stranded in the area. In total, more than 170 roads are affected nationwide, several at the red alert level (closed due to trucks and requiring the use of snow chains) in Ávila and Segovia, and between Cáceres and Salamanca.

The first Three Kings' Day gift arrived early this year in the form of snowfall in Catalonia, and many children took to the streets to play in anticipation of the parade on Monday afternoon. The first snowflakes began to fall on Sunday night in the western regions and on the Segarra plateau, but it was during the early hours of Monday morning that the snow spread and intensified, reaching Central Catalonia and accumulating in the areas where it snowed most heavily. The forecast indicates that this picture-postcard landscape will continue for the next few hours thanks to the low temperatures, which will keep the snow on the ground.

The Pyrenees awoke to a blanket of white this Friday morning. The snowfall, which began overnight at all elevations, primarily affected the northern slopes, but the event spread to the southern slopes as well. Areas such as the Boí Valley, the Fosca Valley, Cerdanya, Alt Urgell, and Alt Ripollès saw snow reach even the valley floors. Snowflakes and some powdery flurries were also observed in lower-lying towns like La Seu d'Urgell and Ripollès.

The abrupt change in weather over the past few days has brought temperatures down. We've suddenly gone from the warm and muggy atmosphere of last week to a late-October atmosphere, with cold mornings and cool to mild middays. In fact, temperatures are around four or five degrees below average. Autumn has arrived with a bang. And with this influx of cold, polar air, the snow level in the Pyrenees has also dropped sharply, with some areas already seeing the first snowfalls of the season.

March brought extraordinary rainfall to much of Catalonia, finally ending the historic drought that had dragged on for more than three years. This precipitation, which in the high altitudes of the Pyrenees fell in the form of snow, accumulated to such significant depths that it hadn't seen for some time. Beyond ensuring an excellent end to the season at the ski resorts, this snowfall makes the Pyrenees look truly white and is a great reserve for the thaw that is already underway.
