After ten years, IB3 is once again broadcasting films dubbed into Spanish and has eliminated the option to watch the films it broadcasts as premieres in Catalan. This has been denounced by the Obra Cultural Balear (OCB), and the president of this entity, Antoni Llabrés, has reminded the management of IB3 that the commitment of the Balearic public television to the Catalan language and its normalization is not an option that can vary depending on who occupies the management, but a legal mandate to be fulfilled. With its decision to broadcast content in Spanish, the management of IB3 violates a series of laws: the Statute of Autonomy, which establishes Catalan as the language of the Balearic Islands; the law on linguistic normalization; the audiovisual law of the Balearic Islands and, in particular, the law of the Public Broadcasting Entity of the Balearic Islands, which specifies the following (worth quoting) in extenso): "The programming of the Public Broadcasting Entity of the Balearic Islands must fulfill the functions of a public service and must contribute to the normalization of the language and culture of the Balearic Islands. The vehicular language of all programming is Catalan [...] These requirements also apply to the audiovisual production of the entity and its subsidiary providers." Indeed, if it does not work in Catalan and in favor of Catalan, IB3 ceases to perform its work as a public service and, therefore, it no longer makes sense for it to be paid for with the taxes of the citizens of the Balearic Islands. To watch films and programs in Spanish, we already have all the rest of the television offerings, with the exception of TV3 (À Punt cannot be tuned in from the Balearic Islands, and now they're also charging for it).
