More than a year ago, a woman reported to the Palafrugell Citizen Assistance Office that someone had drawn up a rental contract for an apartment owned by her husband, even though he had been dead for some time. What she didn't know at the time was that this suspicion would eventually uncover a network of fraudulent family reunifications and document forgery. An investigation by the Mossos d'Esquadra (Catalan police) and the Palafrugell Local Police resulted on July 30th in the arrest of a 57-year-old man for allegedly committing 23 crimes against the rights of foreign citizens and another 23 for falsifying public, official, or commercial documents.

One day after the new immigration regulations approved by the Spanish government came into force, the Department of Social Rights has sent city councils instructions on the two new reports that municipal technicians must prepare so that migrants can begin the regularization process. The Spanish government's text contemplates new ways to request regularization and reduces bureaucracy in the process, although it also leaves Legal loopholes for asylum seekers whose applications are rejected.

Guillermo and Silvia's lawyer (not their real names) advised them to abandon the process for international protection they had begun in 2021, when they arrived from a Central American country they prefer not to reveal. Settled with their family in a town in Girona, they had both secured permanent contracts, contributing to Social Security "from day one" and hoping to put years of persecution and hardships of forced exile behind them. They say they already received an unfavorable ruling last fall and that with "the threat of May 20th," they decided to abandon their asylum applications, although this step means they are now in an irregular situation. The hardest part, they say, was having to inform company managers that they could no longer work legally.

Migrant workers are gaining ground in high-value-added sectors, specifically in scientific and technical professional activities, as well as in those related to information and communication. In the former case, Social Security recorded a 7.8% increase in foreign workers across the country this March compared to March 2024, while in the latter case, the increase is 6.3%, as announced this Wednesday by the Ministry of Inclusion, Social Security and Migration.
