As a no-fishing zone, favored by its proximity to the mouth of the Ter River, you can observe a very rich ecosystem of fauna and flora, full of underwater caves and unique corners, to the point that the diving centers of Estartit have much more demand than supply for excursions and those of interest.

"I love sharks," he says. And it shows in the passion with which he speaks not only about sharks, but about the entire seabed. Although he is concerned about the impact of climate change, he remains hopeful about humanity. "Good things have been done, like banning the killing and eating of sharks. If this has been done, it means other things can be done."

However, until now, some were unknown, or, despite their existence, the exact location and size of their habitats had not been identified. To fill this historical information gap, a pioneering project was launched four years ago to produce a detailed x-ray of the Catalan seabed, which was presented this Thursday: the map of marine habitats of Catalonia. "For the first time, we have information on the entire Catalan coast, from Portbou to Alcanar," explained Sara Pont, head of the heritage planning service at the Department of Environmental Policies and Natural Environment.

Right in front of Coma-ruga lies, in fact, the only Marine Reserve in all of Catalonia (there are 12 in the entire country). This is the Masía Blanca, a very important refuge for some endangered species that occupies an area of 457 hectares. This small oasis, protected since 1999, "is full of life," explains Laura Sánchez Vila, a marine biologist with the Oceánicos association, which has state accreditation to organize tours with snorkel in this area.
