I've written here before about the slabs, these peaks of the underwater rock ranges, which don't quite form islets because they're only a few feet from the surface and can only be seen when the weather is stormy and the waves are low. The slabs are flat, about the size of a table, and it's fun to swim and stand up on them. It's not easy; the sea has to be flat, and you get stuck in mussels, shells, and snails, but if you make it through, you've reached the summit. Ankle-deep in water, you're standing on the great marine esplanade, and all you see is the view.

Columbus and Magellan wanted to reach the Indies, where so much wealth came from, where knowledge had always come from. First and foremost, America was the West Indies. The concept of the West was born looking towards the east and was in parallel with the redefinition of Europe, a name-idea that the Greeks had invented and that had been used in the early Middle Ages, soon replaced by the term Christendom in opposition to Islam. There was then a time of alliance between Christianity and the Chinese Empire against the powerful Ottoman world.

On the other, when the good weather arrives, the country scares me away. Perhaps more villas have been built in the protected area, or perhaps the city authorities have further restricted street parking, reserving winter and summer for the wealthy who own a house and garage and only come for a fortnight.

Research published in the journal Nature The study, led by Eleanor Scerri, a researcher at the Max Planck Institute of Geoanthropology (Germany) and the University of Malta, with the participation of Ethel Allué and Aitor Burguet-Coca from IPHES-BÚSQUEDA and the Rovira i Virgili University (URV), documents a voyage for the first time. According to the study's authors, this voyage was carried out using "dug-out canoes without sails." The navigators oriented themselves using the stars, ocean currents, and coastal landmarks.
