For investors in the Spanish stock market, it is the starting gun for the most lucrative period of the year. In 2025, the Ibex-35 reaffirmed itself as the one with the most generous remuneration in the Old Continent. According to the latest market data, the Spanish selective index leads dividend yield in Europe, thus breaking its own record of payments in a year marked by the strength of business results.

In the midst of a focus on core businesses after the first 10 years of acquisitions, the telecommunications infrastructure operator was also affected by "impairment losses, which weighed down the final result despite a strong operational improvement." Revenue increased by 5.8% to €4.418 billion thanks to strong market demand. Operating profit rose from €197 million to €476 million in 2025, more than doubling compared to the previous year. According to Cellnex, "this performance reflects stronger underlying operating results and a lower impact from non-recurring items compared to the previous year." The telecommunications tower business, the largest group, generated €3.225 billion in revenue, a 5.5% increase. "2025 marks a turning point in our transformation, with a structural improvement in free cash flow that confirms the strength of our organic growth and continued progress in operational efficiency," said Marco Patuano, the company's CEO. For 2026, Cellnex forecasts revenue between €4.075 billion and €4.175 billion and adjusted EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization) between €3.425 billion and €3.525 billion. The company states that the results are "solid" and in line with the forecasts communicated to the market. It also affirms that it "has reinforced its position as a leading operator of communications infrastructure in Europe." The company highlights the increase in shareholder remuneration, exceeding initial targets through a €1 billion share buyback program. In January, it began paying the first tranche of its committed annual dividend of €500 million.

With this transaction, the telecommunications infrastructure manager completes the deal it announced last October. The transaction is being carried out through its subsidiary Cellnex France, which is transferring 99.9% of the capital of Towerlink France, the entity responsible for the group's main data center operations in the country, as reported by Cellnex to the Spanish National Securities Market Commission (CNMV). The closing of the deal follows approval from French authorities regarding foreign direct investment. It was also completed after fulfilling all customary conditions for this type of transaction, including the information and consultation process with employee representatives in France. The sale has been settled entirely in cash, as planned since the initial announcement, the company reported. Cellnex announced the transaction on October 17, 2025, when it reported the signing of a put option agreement with Vauban Infra Fibre for this transfer. At that time, the telecommunications infrastructure group explained that the divestment in France was part of its strategic focus and was subject to regulatory approvals and the corresponding labor procedures, which have now been completed.

In Europe alone, more than 520 million people are connected via mobile networks. Each line transmits more than 50 gigabytes of data per month, and 5G alone already accounts for more than 200 million active connections. All of this requires energy: about 0.12 kilowatt-hours per gigabyte transferred. But what happens if all of this stops? Maintaining the electricity supply is vital because our communications and our presence in the world depend on it. If the electricity fails, not only does technology shut down: the digital pulse of society stops. During the blackout of April 28, 2025, the absolute dependence of modern society on energy and communication networks became evident. Cellnex, which played a key role in keeping broadcasting and emergency networks operational, demonstrated that investment in robust infrastructure is essential to guaranteeing continuity of service in critical situations.

https://en.ara.cat/economy/telefonica-and-cellnex-challenge-the-fiber-optic-tender-that-the-generalitat-has-awarded-to-sirt-and-huawei_1_5571998.html

Telefónica and Cellnex have challenged the tender for the deployment of the public fiber optic network that the Generalitat awarded to the temporary joint venture (UTE) Sirt-Connecta, which will use Chinese Huawei technology, as has been reported. The Country And ARA has been able to confirm this. At the end of October, the Catalan government awarded these companies the contract to connect all its public services and facilities via fiber optics. The contract, worth 127 million euros, excluded companies such as Telefónica, MasOrange, and Vodafone and raised concerns because it involved the introduction of Chinese technology into a strategic project—one that connects critical public services such as the Mossos d'Esquadra (Catalan police), the education system, and emergency services—at a time when the European Union has recommended against it. At the time, Salvador Illa's government clarified that it was a framework agreement for services, and "not an equipment purchase." Sirt-Connecta obtained a higher score, so they won the bid. The contract includes the execution of the civil works, the provision of equipment as a service, and the tasks necessary to establish and manage the connectivity. The appeal filed by Telefónica and Cellnex, which planned to use European Nokia technology, has been submitted jointly to the Public Contracts Tribunal of Catalonia and could lead to the project being halted until a decision is reached. Government sources confirm they have received the appeal filed by Telefónica and Cellnex. "This is a possibility contemplated within the framework of the standard and rigorous administrative process for a public tender such as this. Now, the procedure will continue following the processes and mechanisms established by law," these sources indicate. Huawei, in the EU's crosshairs

The European Commission has long been waging an offensive against the Chinese multinational, following the lead of the United States, which has resulted in the company facing severe restrictions. The Commission considers Huawei to pose a sufficiently high risk to the security of the European Union to justify excluding it from the deployment of 5G networks in member states, a recommendation that some countries, such as Lithuania, have adopted. However, the warning does not constitute a ban on the company. In this regard, the Catalan government indicated that the contract under scrutiny concerns fiber optics, not 5G. One of the main reasons behind the US and Brussels' crusade against the tech giant is the never-proven assumption that Huawei leaks information to the Chinese government or even facilitates espionage. Since 2017, China has required its companies to provide intelligence services with all requested information. In any case, Huawei has managed to secure contracts worldwide because it offers lower prices and high technical quality. In this way, it has gained ground while other companies, including European ones (Ericsson and Nokia), have lost ground. Now that Europe is seeking to safeguard its strategic autonomy, especially in telecommunications and security, Brussels sees this as a problem. The Generalitat's project aims to leverage and strengthen its publicly owned fiber optic network (which will exceed 8,000 km by 2025). It will connect 5,419 Generalitat public service offices to this robust, high-quality network, under public governance. Combined with the offices already connected, this will bring the total number of Generalitat public offices connected to the network to 6,164, resulting in significant cost savings.

In Europe, more than 520 million people use mobile services daily, each line generates more than 50 GB of traffic per month, and 5G already exceeds 200 million active connections. All of this requires constant energy: approximately 0.12 kWh for every gigabyte transferred. The blackout of April 28, 2025, on the Iberian Peninsula was a clear example of what happens when this machine stops. The incident affected strategic points and tested the response capacity of media outlets, operators, and institutions, highlighting the critical role of infrastructure in emergency situations. Journalism in an exceptional situation

At RTVE, the power outage immediately activated emergency protocols to guarantee the continuity of public service, explains the network's operations director, Víctor Sánchez Espinosa. Broadcasting was concentrated on the main channels, the operation of critical equipment was ensured, and production was reorganized to adapt to the limitations imposed by the blackout. Simultaneously, newsrooms prioritized service-oriented reporting and live coverage, a return to the essence of journalism in critical situations.
