Five parliamentary groups, with an absolute majority, supported the creation of a new law regulating cooperative housing for use, a non-profit housing model based on self-managed communities. The bill presented this Wednesday in Parliament seeks to improve the legal framework within which these entities operate, which currently provide 1,175 homes spread across 66 buildings in Catalonia.

Facilitating access to housing for thousands of families who were unable to access it through the free market. This is the mission of Fem Ciutat, which, over the course of its 35 years of existence, has completed the construction of more than 4,200 homes throughout Catalonia, making the cooperative one of the largest non-public developers of protected housing in any form (purchase, building rights, rental, etc.). The SIS Project (Inclusive and Social Supermarket and Cafeteria) is a pioneering initiative born in 2021 as a result of the inter-cooperation between various worker cooperatives and other organizations in the social and solidarity economy, led by Entrem Grup Cooperatiu d'Inserció Laboral. The initial objective was to develop an innovative and transformative supermarket model that would create jobs for vulnerable groups with a value proposition that integrated inclusion, community development, and economic viability through cooperative principles. The idea ultimately materialized into two interconnected spaces: the SIS supermarket, managed under a social franchise model with Caprabo—the alliance with which it contributes knowledge of the sector, minimizing risks—and the Espai SIS Cafeteria, a comfortable space with a restaurant service and designed to promote cultural activities.

In 2005, a group of professionals from the socio-educational field created ACTUA, a non-profit social initiative cooperative that develops and manages projects that promote inclusion, coexistence, and the prevention of situations of vulnerability, especially among children and young people. The cooperative promotes initiatives rooted in the region, based on collaboration, self-management, and commitment to people. As the president of the governing board, Berta Pinyol, states, "We are committed to generating real opportunities to transform society through educational action and the empowerment of individuals, teams, and projects, based on proximity, inclusion, and a community perspective."

A few weeks ago, Som Energia, Som Connexió, and Som Mobilitat formalized the intercooperation agreement that facilitates joint access for companies to essential services such as energy, telecommunications, and mobility based on ethical and sustainable criteria. This collaboration, the result of a shared journey since 2023, now has 10,600 user companies, 450 of which have contracted two or more services.

Idaria is a non-profit worker and job placement cooperative that offers various services related to the green and circular economy, with the aim of promoting the labor inclusion of people experiencing social exclusion and thus contributing to improving the socioeconomic conditions of the area where it operates.

From configuring air quality sensors to be carried on bicycles to analyzing the sustainability of a collective project, to the deployment of a new digital office in the cloud. All of these activities are what femProcomuns makes available to public administrations and the solidarity economy, as well as to its user members, currently numbering around 200, approximately half of which are entities and the other half individuals. The three areas of activity of the cooperative, created in 2017, are guided by the principles of open cooperativism, community self-management, ecological, economic, and human sustainability, shared knowledge, and replicability. "The purpose was to create a strategic social tool that would contribute to consolidating an ecosystem based on the socioeconomic model of the commons," its promoters point out.

The United Nations has declared 2025 the International Year of Cooperatives. The date coincides with another anniversary, the 125th anniversary of organized cooperativism.

Agricultural cooperatives are companies that, under cooperative principles, bring together farmers and ranchers, who are both members and owners. In Catalonia, between 32,000 and 33,000 people support a sector with an increasingly significant impact on the country's productive fabric. Not surprisingly, 37% of Catalan agricultural production comes from cooperatives, with such representative products as olive oil (76% of the total), almonds (72%), hazelnuts (67%), carob (63%), wine (53%), seeded fruit (24.44%) and herbaceous crops (excluding fodder) (39%), citrus fruits, and milk (36%).

There's a restaurant in Banyoles where every dish is signed by a woman. Where work isn't just a job, but a springboard for people in vulnerable situations. A restaurant woven from sisterhood and promoted by a women's association in the midst of the pandemic, which over time has become the civic center of the old town of the capital of the Pla de l'Estany region. A space for cultural encounters and social integration, but also for breaking stereotypes. Located in the former Fonda Comas, just a three-minute walk from the Plaza Mayor and the Darder Museum, La Porta del Món was born in the fall of 2020 as a non-profit community project that responded to a need that the Món Banyoles women's association had identified three years earlier. The goal was to create a space where migrant women could gain confidence and autonomy to make the leap into the workforce without the risk of being exploited, based on what they felt most confident in: cooking.

Juanjo Llopis (Valencia, 1973) has completed his first hundred days as CEO of Caixa Ingenieros. A defender of the cooperative banking model he leads, he argues that the bank has the capacity to grow without having to make purchases, member by member, with a network of physical branches combined with a strong digital commitment.
